CHAPTER EIGHT
THE KILLING CURSE

§ § §

I walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, not knowing what to expect. Lupin had been a great teacher; he taught me how to fight dementors. And, he was one of my father's closest friends. I knew nothing about Mad-Eye.

I walk towards the front of the room and take a seat next to Ron, since Harry and Hermione were sitting together. Once the whole class was settled down, Moody spoke up.

"You can put those away," He says roughly, pointing to the books on our desks. "You won't be needing them."

I looked at Ron. "I can't tell if that's a good or bad thing," I muttered as the class put away our books.

"Anything without books is a good thing." Ron replied and I laughed a little, then turned back to Moody.

"I've had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class. Seems you've had a pretty thorough grounding in tackling Dark creatures- you've covered boggarts, Red Caps, hinkypunks, grindylows, Kappas, and werewolves, is that right?" We all mumble an agreement. "But you're behind, very behind, on dealing with curses. So I'm here to bring you up to scratch on what wizards can do to each other. I've got one year to teach you how to deal with Dark-"

"You aren't staying?" Ron calls out in confusion.

"You'll be Weasley's son, eh? Yeah, I'm staying just the one year. Special favor to Dumbledore... One year, and then back to my quiet retirement. So, straight into it. Curses. Now, according to the Ministry of Magic, I'm supposed to teach you counter curses and leave it at that. But Professor Dumbledore's got a higher opinion of your nerves, he reckons you can cope, and I say, the sooner you know what you're up against, the better. How are you supposed to defend yourself against something you've never seen?"

"So you're demonstrating curses for us?" I raise my eyebrows. "On who? I have a list of people I'd volunteer." I shot a glare across the room to Noah, who was lounging in on the the chairs at a desk against the wall.

Noah had matured over the summer. His hair now hung just above his eyes, his tie was looser, and his jawline more defined. He smirked at me. I rolled my eyes and looked away.

"Ah, Miss. Potter. How'd I guess I'd get that answer from you?" Moody grinned a little. I shrugged and leant back in my chair. "Do any of you know how many unforgivable curses are there?"

My hand shot up, but Hermione said, "Three, sir."

"Granger, some of us want to participate." I groaned, dropping my head in my hands. I love Hermione but this was my favorite class.

"And they are?" Moody asks. He points to Ron.

"Er... my dad did tell me about one. Is it- the Imperius Curse?"
