How far we've come-Matchbox20

Teenage Dirtbag-Weezer

I turn the volume down on the radio, then turning it back up sensing that I need a distraction aside from the quiet thrum of the engine of the truck traveling down the old road.

I tap my foot nervously, I feel my heart in my throat and about a million butterflies in my stomach.

I remind myself over and over you have done this before. It's going to be ok. But this is the first time in 5 years.

Today is my first day at a new Highschool. Except it's also my first day at an actual Highschool. My old school was a charter school and well...it just wasn't a normal Highschool.

I moved to lovely Abilene Texas 2 months before the school year ended. Great. Today is a Tuesday, which is better than Monday. I keep my eyes plastered to the road outside true window.

"Are you ok?" I turn to see my father smiling an unsure smile.

I nod placing a smile on my lips, "dad it's not as if I haven't done this before. I'll be fine." I fiddled with the hem of my sweatshirt.

He didn't look convinced but he didn't press any further. This school was going to be 8 times bigger than my old school. With two cafeterias, about 7 buildings, a library, and freedom.

My mom decided to take my two younger sisters too school so my dad could take me alone. My dad was currently touring Korea for the Air Force and would be gone for a full year. He left last December and just took a 14 day vacation to help us move to Texas. I cried when I saw him, mom really surprised us this time.

I look down at my old black ankle boots. With dirt and mud caked into the cracks. I honestly didn't care for my shoes, ok that's a lie. I love shoes but these have sentimental value. I wore my favorite Betta Butt Jeans. Yes that is what they are called. Paired that with a dark blue hoodless sweater and I was good.

My makeup was simple: foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara, blush. Simple.

"Bug, I know this is hard. But you can do it. You are strong." My dad tried to build up my confidence but it's not working.

He doesn't know what it's like.

"Yea you're right." I smile up at him.

"Now what does your schedule look like?" He pronounced schedule like the Europeans do. I giggle, he only does that for me.

"Well my schedule is Volleyball, JROTC, Spanish, Pre-Ap English, Edgenuity, Biology, And Algebra." I glance from my paper to my dads furrowed brow.

"What the hell is Edgenuity?"

I laugh out loud, "I think it's a health class dad." He look dumbfounded.

"Whatever just be sure to eat. I'm sure someone will be nice to eat lunch with you." I wanted to roll my eyes. Nobody is nice in Highschool.

But instead I just nodded, "yea I'm sure you're right." We pull up to the school in what seemed like to soon.

"Do you want me to..." I shake my head no stating I can do it myself. He seemed to want to protest against the matter but had a breakfast with the Base Commander, which I reminded him he couldn't miss. I hoped out and waved goodbye staring at the black truck as it pulled out of view.

I turn around hoping for a sign to show me where to go. I glance a McDonalds outta the corner of my eye and chastised myself for thinking of ditching. I return my focus to a small building with Academic placed at the top of the door.

I walk as confidently as I could, which may have looked like me walking like a chicken, towards the door. There were people littering the halls stepping into the door and I saw the counselors office which I was told to go straight to.

I open the door and am greeted with the sweet smell of lavender. At least I think it is lavender. I mean a lot of people say lavender smells bad. But this smells like purple. Wait is that a  thing. I mean can someone put two different senses together? Purple the color to purple the..smell. I mean it's different for orange. You can taste, smell, and draw with it. But-

"Ow!" I stumble away my boots carefully helping me regain balance as I rub my head squinting my nose in pain. I look straight ahead to see a wall which was currently hugging my face.

Why?

"You okay?" A hear an insincere voice say. I turn to the desk from which the voice came from.

"Yes I'm fine. I'm just really clumsy I could trip over air if I could." I tried to joke.

The lady didn't seem impressed. Which made me wonder why they would put her in the front to greet people. I want to see a smiling pony instead of a wannabe Dolly Parton and Marilyn Monroe mashed together with an attitude in my morning.

I shake the dirty thoughts away. Be nice. But be nice Hunter.

"What do you need?" She starts to pull out a box and reveals the contents of it. Oh. Oh my god.

Condoms, pills, viagra...she had every sex related thing you could think of. Even a..a VIBRATOR! Maybe this is the wrong office...

"Oh that's mine." She said with her full tone.

"I'm actually new. I'm here for a map.." trying to compose myself.

"Oh here ya go." She handed me a map which made my heart stop. It was so confusing.

"Gimme your schedule...your first is here...your second here...third is here.." she said as she circled and wrote the door number and period number.

I heard the full ping of the bell and looked at the map and smiled a thanks to the lady before taking off to my first period.

*****

It was finally my 5th period and I got through lunch and my first four without anyone taking a great interest in me.

I settled into my Edgenuity seat I was assigned and went to the website as instructed. My health class would be majorly spent in front of a computer. Ok I guess.

I start the lesson and I hear the seat next to me pull out and hear someone sit in it. Assigned seating..right.

I turn to take a small glance at the person next to me.

So this will be a One Direction fan fic and I'm really depicting who she should meet first. I'll figure it out.
