Chapter 6
~Josh~
“Mom! Why’d you do that?” “I wasn’t doing anything wrong, sweetie! I was just being friendly, that’s it. What’s wrong with that?” “Nothing, mom. But your definition of “friendly” is the same as humiliation. Mine, is, talk, be funny and make sure to seem fun. WHICH CLEARLY YOU DID NOT DO.”
I was absolutely astonished when I saw Charlotte so... dressed up. I mean it’s not a bad thing. It’s just that, 1. She wasn’t the type to dress up like that... or was she? 2. We’re having rehearsal for heaven’s sake, not a baby shower. And 3. I knew my mother had something to do with it.
I just had to confirm, that’s all.
“First of all, Josh, calm down for a few minutes.” My mom tried to restrain me. It kind of worked. The way her voice soothed me and made me feel safe. I sat down on the soft couch. “Okay, I’m sorry. But you know I can’t help it when a girl comes here and I try to—“ “But mom, you-“ “Let me finish.” I nodded my head. “I can’t help seeing a simple girl who I feel might actually see herself in the way I see her, in a positive way.”
“But mom, you know, that freaks a lot of people out. Okay, specifically women. You can be yourself around them and all, but you can’t always expect them to be like you.” She sighed. “I know, I know... I could get a little carried away. I’m sorry, honey.” She hugged me. I hugged her back and said, “Yeah, I know you are. Just try to limit yourself that’s it.” We hug for a few more minutes until I finally let go.
“I should go back upstairs and explain them what just happened.” I walked back up. “Okay, sure! Oh honey!” She called me before I could climb up the stairs. “Why do you seem so... defending now? Especially towards Charlotte?” “What are you talking about? We’re friends! I just... didn’t want her to feel embarrassed or anything.” “That’s it?” She looked at me.
Yeah. That’s it. I don’t like her as in a total crush or anything. I mean, I know she’s really pretty, kind and not to mention, pretty funny. She makes me feel good about myself. She’s someone who you can feel lucky to be with and don’t have to feel like a total dumb-butt. Like, a cent. Because even if it seems like a useless coin to others, it still brings some luck at times when we have no idea what to do.
It’s as if she’s....
“Son?” My mom was snapping her fingers in front me. “Oh yeah, gotta go.” I rushed up.
I better focus. But, it’s as if I can’t. Why not?
“Josh, let’s bang some drums! Well, not in that way.” She calls me. “Oh really now? Haha! While you hit your huge keyboard? That’s what he said.” She and I laughed.
I know I don’t have a crush on Charlotte. I know, I’ll always consider her as a bud. But the weirdest thing is, I feel like she's the only person who gets me.
"Race you back to the room!" She shouted, running.
The real me. Foolish and someone who tries his best just to have fun.
