Chapter 1

Three months later

It had been three months since the death of Richard, still so many unanswered questions, particularly in my mind lingered there. My best friend said that Richard came into the school yelling and waving around a gun in the air, which caused the few students in the hallway to panic. Apparently this is what set Richard off; the commotion brought it on. Though I beg to differ, Richard wasn't stable since he had been diagnosed with a mild case of depression. That morning Chrissie said Richard started humming some kind of Christmas song one she didn't recognize at the time as he shot the hallway. Though I would soon find out which song and only one person dare call me Bells, and Richard only knew it because he happened to be his friend. It had happened a month before Christmas, exactly one month before Christmas Eve to be exact. The day of our schools Thanksgiving assembly; everyone dressed up in our school colors of light blue and black. Weird combination but they looked really good together; I was supposed to be there early that day being school president and all but I wasn't. I ended up having to take my little brother to school that day because my mother had to go into the office early and was unable to. My brother is five, a complete pain in my butt, but I love him. I never made it to school that day. I wore my usual traditional sprit day clothes, the tradition started freshmen year of high school with my ex best friend. Our own resident bad boy, he used to not be that way though, something happened though when we both began college and our friendship ended. I lost my best friend and my only love, Ryder. I was and still am in love with Ryder Jameston. My outfit consisted of light washed jeans, a black tank top, our school sweater, and a baseball cap with my brown wavy hair pulled through the loop in the back. But you see that day a missing piece of evidence was lost amongst the commotion, a bullet to be precise one that would be the key to what had happened that fateful day.

Silly me I forgot to introduce myself, my name is Emmabell Nicole McCain. I am the student body president, goody to shoes if you must know and the most popular person on campus, well besides my best friend. My wavy brown hair reached my waist and my hazel eyes sparkled in the light, I'm five foot four and slim with a petite body. I live with my parents along with my little brother in a fairly large house since my father is a really important doctor and my mother is a world-renowned fashion designer. Truthfully I did not want to be any of those things, so of course arguments arise when their eldest child wants to follow her own dreams and not those of her parents.

Thoughthat day changed everything. I remember pulling up to my brother's elementary school and watching him walk safely to class when my phone rang with Sydney's name flashing across the screen.

"Sid, what's wrong?" I asked her worry laced in my voice; she should be in her home economics class I thought to my self.

"Schools closed for the next few days, Emma," Her voice faltered.

"What do you mean school is closed Sid?" Fear clouded my mind and seeped into my voice as an awful feeling settled in my stomach

"A shooting happened Emma...." Her voice trailed off.

"Sid, what do you mean a shooting? What happened?" My voice now a simple whisper, as my throat became tight.

"Richard, he... he shot of the senior hallway" her voice trembled.

"What, but I thought... no it can't be true he wouldn't do that".

"He shot four students before taking his... life." She whispered.

"Who got injured?" I asked, afraid of the names she would say. I feared for my friends and fellow students as I waited. Leaving the car in park as I sat there in silence, the only sound was my breathing and the running heater. Snow still floated down gracefully outside of the car in the chilly New York weather.
