Chapter 15

‘There is always the calm before the storm but in this case… the silence before the sound of a gun’

Darkness once again consumed me, masking me away from the world and hiding me among those that almost get forgotten. I could hear the faint sounds of the carnival fading off into the distance as I traveled further away from civilization. There were no other sounds of cars going by- it was silent not a word was said from my abductor and I was far to gone to say anything. Pain shattered my thoughts as it shot through me from the harsh blow I received to the back of my head and I could feel sticky stuff starting to clump in my hair- blood. I have no idea how it happened so fast and so pristine with calculation and accuracy the only conclusion I could come up with was this person took a medical class or is currently studying medicine.

The car jarred to the left sharply sending me crashing into the side and sending a searing pain from my shoulder down to my fingertips. With that hit I heard the sound of bone snapping and agonizing pain fill me causing me to scream out but my words were lost amongst the fabric that had been stuffed in my mouth. Tears streamed down my face like a waterfall the pain from my shoulder was unbearable compared to the hit I took to the head. I did not have to be a doctor to know my collarbone had been broken, the pain told me everything I needed to know. With each jar of the car the pain became worst but the gag in my mouth muffled my sobs so my cries fell on deaf ears.

We drove for hours it felt like though I knew it couldn’t have been that long since our town was not that big and you could get to the outskirts in a matter of thirty minutes if you wanted to and that was where we currently came to a stop at. The car came to a screeching halt sending me once again flying into the passenger side of the car; the bag over my head blocked my view from the outside world. My hands were bound behind me tied in a very familiar knot, a knot that I had untied to free Jace of his confinement to a chair. These were the same people who had broken into Ryder’s house and attacked the guys all those weeks ago. As I lay there waiting for my attackers to drag me out of the car since I heard the doors open and close only moments before, their steps crunched the gravel around the car. I tried to process who could be driving from how they drove to this place but no one I knew came to mind. I knew the minutes were slowly ticking past one o’clock, the same time the guys should be arriving at the carnival and right now they were my only hope to see me missing.

The sound of the back door opening jarred me from my thoughts and brought my attention towards the slight breeze that came floating in through the open door. With a sharp tug they pulled me the car, slamming my bad shoulder into the ground causing the pain to slice through me like a butcher knife. Tears continued to fall from my eyes as the pain began to become unbearable it flared through me like multiple knives sending me into the darkness swallowed whole by the pain.

Two hours earlier: Eleven o’clock

Children’s laughter filled the air bringing a feeling of content and peace to the atmosphere.

“Sydney what are you doing over here?” A voice questioned from behind me, turning around I saw Chrissie standing in front of Sydney.

Turning back around with a sigh because I did not have time to deal with those two at the moment. The carnival had started an hour ago and things have already seemed to be falling apart. First it was the trigger on the dunk tank it had been stripped causing those whoever sat on the seat would automatically fall into the water without the target ever being hit. The next issue came when the power cords began to short and after taking a look I noticed that if you had plugged in one more plug that a fire would have started due to the over used circuit right behind the pony rides. We had decided at the last minute to add the pony ride to bring more fun to the younger kids. I secured the cords correctly and changed something’s around so it wouldn’t cause a short and create a fire in a crowded area bringing harm to the young ones.
