I sighed as I dumped my keys on on kitchen table. I barely managed to walk to my arm chair before my exhasted knees gave out and I collapsed into the soft, relaxing, chair. I rubbed my temples a before closing my eyes and remembering the event that drained me, more than any crazy monster could.
I was seated behind the cash register. It was 7:45, only a few more minutes before I could leave and return to my apartment, and have a nice turkey sandwich. Little did I know how wrong I was.
Suddenly, a soft bell rang through the store as a few small boys walked in. I judged them to range from 6 to 10 years old. I watched as they're eyes widenned as they saw all the candy. Then, one of the older boys stepped to the front of the tiny crowd and walked over to the candy shelf. He picked up a a green lollypop and sniffed it. 'Yum!'
As if they practised it, the moment the older boy said 'Yum!' all the boys sprited to a different side of the store at the same time. I saw one of the younger boys starting to unwrap on of the blueberry lollypops so I went over to remind him that he had to pay first.
'Pay?' he asked, 'With shiny rocky thingies?'
'Yes.' I replied. 'You stand over there, by the cash register and give me the money and Then you can eat.'
'But, why can't I Just eat it?' he asked with a sorrowful expression.
'Because it cost money. My manager payed for it so you have to pay for it as well.' I replied. I knew it wasnt the best explanation but Then again, the kid was around 6 years old so he wouldn't of understood. By that time, almost half the boys in the store were listening to our conversation so I decided to make it clear. 'That goes for all of you.'
'Can I get this then?' asked another boy. He looked like he was 8 years old. He held up a tiny green chocolate in his left hand.
'Ok.' I walked to the register and open my hand. The boy atarted to give me the money but ITS shook my head. 'I need to check the price of the chocolate first.'
'But, I want the chocolate; its mine!'
'You have to pay first. and to do that, I need to check the price!'
'But if IT give it to you Then you'll eat it!' exclaimed the boy.
'I won't eat it, I promise.' I looked directly into the boy's eye, wanting him to believe me. With a bit of grumbling, he handed over the chocolate. I scanned it. 0.75$. 'Its 75 cents.' I told him. He shoved his hand into his pocket and brung out a bunch of coins. All the boys watched as I counted the value. 25, 35,45,50,55,56,57,58,59- he didn't have enough money.
'You need 16 more cents,' I told him. Unfortuatly, he didn't take the news well.
'What! That is the amount! Give me the chocolate!' he yelled making a gramb for it. I quickly gathered the chocolate in my hand and moved it out of reach.
I was about to tell him to get 16 more cents and come back when the door at the far aide of the wall opened and my manager stepped into the room.
'What iz going on zhere?' he asked facing me.
'This boy,' I gestured to the one infront of me, 'wants to buy a chocolate but he doesn't have enough money.'
'How much iz he zhort?'
'16 cents.'
'Well Thenyou will go home and get 16 more zentz before zoming bazk. Zally here will. zage your zhozolate.' said the manager.
I could tell the boy was trying hard not to laugh at his accent but somehow, he managed. to keep a straight face as he argued. 'But then Zally will eat it!' he whined.
I sighed to my self before answering,'I won't eat your chocolate!'
'Will too!'
'I promise I won't. I'll put the chocolate here,' I put the chocolate in a small basket and Then put the basket on top of the shelf behind the cash register. 'So that I can barely reach it. That way, I won't eat it.'
The boy scrunched up his face and thought. And thought. And thought. Until my manager stepped in and said: 'Well? Are zou going zo get zuor money to buy the zhozolate?'
The boy grumbled and yelled: 'im thinking! Can't you see that!'
'Well, I zont have time zor zilly boyz zo think zo I'll be going. Zally, zolze the zhop, ok?
'Ok,' I reluclutantly agreed. who knew when this boy was going to finish his 'thinking.' Already 4 minutes had passed!
4 minutes... I glanced down at my watch. 7:58. I cleared my throat and said:' the shop closes in 2 minutes. If your buying something, line up otherwise, please come back tomorrow.' At that, the younger boys left, leaving the 3 oldest, including the one who didn't trust me with the chocolate.
6 minutes... it was 8 o'clock now. I got up and began to pack a few baskets of candy away. 'You need to leave now, and come back tomorrow with 16 more cents.' I hated using a tough voicenon kids but this was an exception, my feet felt like lead bricks and I was stuggling to keep my eye lids open.
The boy didn't move.
Instead, the oldest one did. 'Come on Sam. I'll give you a dollar tomorrow for it. Let's go home.'
To my despair he answered: 'im not leaving without my candy.'
Then, the other two boys did something that snapped all the sleep out of me. With a nod, They grabbed the younger boy and dragged him out of the shop. On the way out, he kicked a window, causing a long line to appear as his foot went 'THUNK!'
