I just got done doing dishes and am listening to "Hey there Delilah" by the Plain White T"s while sitting on my bed. I have been listening to alot of music lately and enjoy a certain artist. NF. He us a softcore christian rapper who is very real about his music and is very emotional with it. While listening to his song "Real" (ironically) I thought about how music affects us.
Throughout my life, not many things have been a for sure things. Family, friends, video games, books etc. All except music. It is possibly the most diverse past time of the human race, dating back to the beginning of time. Music comes in many genres and many tones. It can affect your physical looks and mental feelings. There have been many times where I have been listening to my liked list on Spotify and my mood changes because of the song that just came on. Many people rely on music as mental support beam. If you have nobody to talk to about how you feel, music is always the best thing to turn to for most people. But is it always good for us?
I always ask myself this question. Sometimes I question how I listen to the kind of music that I do. Its wierd. I never feel like its something I, as a person would listen to, and am embarrassed when someone hears my music. I find it awkward, sitting there, trying to figure out whether they're into it as well, and if not, why are they still there? To be honest, it sort of feels like masturbation. It sounds awkward, but guys probably understand. Whenever you want to do the affornentioned, you dont care about what others think. But once your done, it feels wrong. You question why you did that. What was the reason? I dont want it now, so why then? Why later? Its something you probably end up pushing aside and getting over. It's the same thing with music, but less shame and, at least for me, I'm always thinking what people think about my music. Whether listening to it or not. I've always had this issue, and it affects me greatly. I dont like playing my music outloud, afraid someone might hear. Afraid I'll be judged by my music and will be shamed because of it.
Others however, have a different way if viewing/handling people listening to their music. Most people seem to have no issues with people just listening to their music. It's ok, because I dont care about what they think. And I've found that usually these people dont have deep music. Music that has a deep feeling, a connection to the artist. That's another big factor with music. Feelings. Every type of music has a sort of clique that goes with it. Rap has hooligans, hip hop has new generations, rock has goths. All of these stereotypes have usually been the same since the music first began. And that's for a reason. Music and the tone it has affects people differently based on personality and feelings. Especially feelings. People question why depressed, upset, usually cheery people will switch from their normal music to something sad, depressing. From personal experience, the reason usually has more to do with an uncontrollable force/problem in their life, and less of a random reason. They may be going through something sad, such as a family member dying, or something stressful/angering, such as parental issues.
We human have this want, this feeling, to make everything similar to how we feel. Whenever we are happy, we surround ourselves with bright, colorful things. Wonderful things tay bring joy to us, since we want to keep this feeling for as long as we can. The opposite is true whenever we are depressed. We change our surroundings to dark, drab, and sad so as we aren't the only ones feeling bad. We dont feel as if we have the power to feel happy again, so we try to bring everyone and everything down with us. Music is probably one of the best examples if this. Whenever were feeling good and or happy, we tend to listen to happy and gleeful music. Whenever we are sad and or depressed, we listen to music filled with sadness, yet filled with the emotion we have. We always want to listen to something that connects to out immediate situation. Always want to enhance how we feel so we can (A. Continue to feel it (B. Have everything feel as you do.
Music is a simple yet deeply complex concept. We use it as an emotional filter for our life, letting it control us and how we feel to a certain extent. Music has and will be around forever. There is no doubt that if the world were to end tomorrow, and reform a week from now with the most primal form of humans, the first thing we will discover other than natural survival skills will be probably the best thing for the human race to ever come across;music.
