Pursuing A Passion

The next day, I sat in all my classes anxious for 7th period to come around so I could talk to Dr. Peterson about what went down when I visited the people that I’ll now call my “aunt and uncle”. It hurt me so much to hear the story of how the kidnapping came about. My birth mother wanted to abort me so my aunt and uncle took me because they disapproved of it? Throughout the day, I felt like a ticking time bomb ready to explode if someone dared to step to me. Fortunately, no one did.

When I got to 7th period, I told Dr. Peterson everything from the fight with Terra to every word that was said between me and my aunt and uncle. It felt good to let off my problems to someone that I knew would listen to me. When I was done, Dr. Peterson took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes. She then said,

“Wow! You went through a lot yesterday.”

“Yup, I couldn’t catch a break!”

“One thing I can hear from what you just told me is that you have a lot of pent up pain and anger inside of you. Using what you told me yesterday, it goes deeper than what happened with the kidnapping. You’ve felt neglected for a long while. What you’re going through right now is just the icing on the cake. Am I on the right track?”

I smiled, “You haven’t said anything wrong yet. It’s almost like you’re reading my mind.”

She continued, “It’s not healthy to keep all the emotions you have stirring inside of you repressed. You need to find a way to let all the energy that’s built up inside of you out constructively.”

“Isn’t that what I’m doing now?”

“You are but I’m talking about something grander and broader than our counseling sessions. Sometimes, the best way to mend pain and brokenness is by establishing a creative outlet to express yourself.”

“I’m going to be honest with you Dr. Peterson. I don’t know what you’re talking about at all.”

She smiled, “Well, I’m not done explaining yet. Can I finish because I think you’ll like this.”

I smiled, “By all means.”

“Ok, let me ask you this. What’s your passion? What’s that one thing that you love doing?”

I immediately said, “Well, I love performing. You know, singing and acting. Sometimes, in my free time, I’ll write songs and stories. I also can play the guitar and most of the wind instruments. I used to get lessons from one of the best musicians in Spain every Saturday when I lived there. That’s one thing that my aunt and uncle did do for me that was productive.”

She dropped her mouth in are, “Are you serious?”

I grinned, “Yeah!”

She laughed, “This doesn’t make any sense! Why aren’t you in the school band?”

“Tryouts aren’t until the last week of this month. I’ve been debating over if I should try out or not.”

She got out from around her desk and sat on the edge that was by me,

“You’re sounding so non-chalet about this. You’re a budding musical genius! You really should try out for the band.”

I smiled, flattered, “Well, when you put it like that, I guess I just might try out. “

“You know what else would be great for you?”

“What?”

“You should audition for the drama club too. Tryouts are afterschool today in the school auditorium. My good friend Dr. Green is over the club. She’s a 9th grade Literature teacher so I know you haven’t run into her yet. She would love to have someone with your skillset audition. Do you think you could make it?”

I grinned and shrugged my shoulders, “I don’t have anything else to do today so why not? I’ll get in contact with Mr. Henderson and tell them that I’m staying.”

“Great! You’re officially starting your journey to overcoming your circumstances. I’m already proud of you!”
