Chapter 15 - The Awakening

Jared sat next to her by the bed as usual and sang to her while he held her hand. Suddenly he noticed pressure on his fingers. Euphorically he looked at her and hoped it wasn't an imagination. As her eyelids flickered and slowly opened, he looked at her happily and with tension. Astonished, she looked at him and asked what had happened and where she was. He answered her and told her about the last days. Slowly she sat up while Jared called the doctor and sent Emma a message.

The doctor came quickly and examined Rachel thoroughly. When she asked for painkillers for her headache, he looked at Rachel and asked if she was ready for news. Astonished, she looked at him and said that if she got any, she would be ready for anything. The doctor denied the painkillers and told Rachel that she was pregnant and that luckily the baby hadn't been harmed.

Rachel's face reflected joy but also panic. She hadn't even thought about children with Jared yet, they were too fresh together at first, and she didn't even know if she wanted children at all. She looked over at Jared who only looked at her with love and said she should digest it in peace. He was just as surprised when the doctor told him, but in the meantime he would look forward to it.

Before he could talk any more, the rest of the band stormed into the room together with Sam and Emma including big balloons and presents. They all called wildly through each other until the doctor loudly calmed them all down and told them that Rachel needed relaxation for herself and that she would please come to her individually and in a civilized manner. Rachel, completely overtaxed, looked at Jared, who just nodded and made sure that everyone went to her one by one and each had some time without overstraining her any further. He also whispered to her that no one else would know, as he wasn't sure if Rachel wanted to keep the baby.

Gratefully she kissed him and kept everyone busy for a moment, had herself brought up to date and then rested again. She learned from Emma that the girl had already received a complaint and was ordered to pay compensation for pain and suffering. She was also committed to a psychiatric ward because she had delusions about herself and Jared as a married couple.

Rachel didn't like to think back to the day when it all happened, but she was just thinking about the baby in her belly. She was unsure what to do and if a baby was the right thing to do right now, just when she didn't know how the Echelons would react. She was so absent that Sam panicked and asked if she had been harmed. Jared noticed the situation and blamed it on the fact that she needed a lot of rest and that the others should come back tomorrow.

He lay down next to her as she gratefully took his hand and snuggled up to him, she fell asleep already. Jared stroked her hair and decided that he would never let her and the baby go. He wanted to marry her and lay the world at her feet. With this thought he also fell asleep exhausted.
