I had left my backpack at my favorite spot in the forest. A tree in the middle of a meadow hidden
by the surrounding forest. I'm not quite sure what happened. I assumed I'd fallen asleep sitting against the tree while looking at the stars. The moon was full tonight and it gleamed gorgeously. My brother was either asleep or freaking out along with his wife, Piper, that I wasn't home. They really shouldn't be surprised. I'd done this before. But, I guess since I start school tomorrow it gives them the right.I've never been to Oregon before I moved in with my brother around a month ago. I'd moved all the way from Virginia to Oregon. I don't mind it at all really. I didn't have any friends anyway. The forest has been my safe place and this tree is where I come whenever for whatever. I knew the woods like the back of my hand by now. Spending all day everyday in the woods, you kind of memorize it and recognize the smallest detail to know where you are. Or at least, I do.
Despite the fact I don't like school, I had to go. Turns out my brother is a teacher at my high school. My first period, home room. The schools (Elementary, Junior High, And Highschool) are part of a district that belongs to a giant company. This company Nathan, my brother, and Piper both work for. The house we live in is part of company housing. All the houses are way out in the woods and away from the city. I love it. Some of the houses are close together. The club house, a.k.a a giant mansion in the center of all this housing madness, is where the CEO of the company lives. Along with any guests or members of the company can stay if need be. It sounded cool and I wanted to see it, but we haven't gotten around to it. Some houses, like where me Nathan and Piper live, are farther away. But, I wanted to see how big this 'Mansion' was.
Sitting against the tree, the cold breeze filled my lungs. It was the middle of January. It had snowed yesterday, but some of the snow had melted. It was just about freezing outside. Some snow had started to fall. I was about to get up when I noticed an oversized, fluffy as hell, silver wolf pup taking a nap right there in my lap. That's also when I heard the sound of footsteps, crunching in the snow.Wolves.
Wolves?
I didn't know there were wolves in these woods. They were shades of brown, gray, silver. Some had spots or lines, or even streaks of white. Snow had fallen on their fur, making them look icy. They had only stopped around eight or nine feet away from me. One with icy blue eyes walked up to me.So close... So close I could touch it... So I did.
I reached my hand out and touched the wolf's ear. He was silver, with icy blue eyes that could probably pierce your soul. And for some reason. They didn't attack me. They all stood and watched as I pet his ear. His eyes glazed over, it took a moment before they became clear again."... Is this your wolf pup. . ?" I asked cautiously. I knew I wasn't expecting an answer. But I got one. I retracted my hand and placed it on the wolf pups back, most likely waking him. The wolf in front of me nodded. My mouth opened in shock. "Well, I wasn't really expecting that clear of a response." I chuckled. The wolf gave me a wolfish grin.
I heard a yawn and some movement in my lap. The pup had woken up. As if he was full of excitement and energy, he bounded upwards and ran off over to the other wolves. I grabbed my bag and stood up, slinging it over my shoulder. It was just then I realised how huge these wolves were. They were taller than me standing on all fours. Not that I'm that tall, anyway. The wolf in front of my had sat down and was watching the pup and his pack members bound through the snow. I smiled, I wish I could do that. "Hey, would you eat me if I went to play with the pup?" I asked. The wolf tilted his head, but then nodded. His eyes glazed over again, I hardly thought anything of it. I dropped my bag and ran toward the pup.
I was greeted with paws to my stomach, knocking me into the snow. I shivered and was licked in the face by none other then the little pup. I laughed and stood up. He bounded through the snow and into the woods. I followed. "Hey!" I yelled while laughing, the smile plastered on my face was hard to ignore. The other wolves had caught up with me and the pup. The wolves were sprinting and so was I. I even managed to keep up. They ran through the trees with ease. They were gorgeous. "This is amazing!" I ran. The pup ran next to me. He looked so happy.
I'm not sure what, but I felt like something was drawing me closer. The smell of honey loomed around me. I kept running closer to where the smell was coming from. I wanted- No, needed to find what it was. But, I was stopped. The wolf with icy blue eyes jumped in front of me. I kept walking closer and he growled. I didn't care. I kept walking toward the edge of the forest.
It was a clearing in the woods, I was near my house now. I finally noticed this was the other houses for the company Nathan and Piper work for. I walked up to the edge of the trees, It was the middle of the night but two boys around my age were standing near the trees. They were about twenty feet away, they spotted me. And the wolves
"Shit." I backed up the wolf pup did as well.
"Hey-" The boy on the right yelled, he had stormy gray eyes and brunette hair. He wore black sweatpants and a gray T-shirt. He yelled and tried to get my attention."Uh... " I picked the pup up and sprinted away. The other wolves followed. 'Not good, the wolves could end up hurt.' I thought. Soon we were back at the tree. The pup whimpered and I set him down. Frantically looking over him to make sure he was okay. "You're... You're alright. I'm sorry, they could've called the police, or animal control. That wouldn't end well for either of us. Everyone's alright?" I said out of breath. The wolves looked confused but they nodded. And again with the eyes glazing over. I sigh. "You should probably go back to where you stay, I don't want the pup getting hurt. And if those people do contact the authorities I want nothing to happen to any of you. Okay?" I ordered more then asked.
They nodded. The pup whimpered and licked my face as a goodbye. I watched them disappear into the forest. I sat at the tree again. Staring up at the full moon and the stars that littered the sky. Out here away from all the light pollution, the stars looked so pretty. There were so many, I knew I could never in my lifetime count them all. I closed my eyes, "Stay Wild, Moon Child." I whispered. A quote Nathan tells me all the time.
I didn't realize how tired I was til I fell asleep.
