➸ chapter five; jealous or selfish?

Calum felt a little on edge when he came across the picture of Charlotte and her ex-boyfriend. Jealousy wouldn't be a good word to describe what he felt, but in a way he was.

The emotions he felt was completely knew to him; it wasn't like he befriended girls over the internet who just happened to be easy on the eyes every day, so finding out she did have a boyfriend—which shouldn't have surprised him—made something bubble inside of him.

calum =] said: how long have you guys dated?

lottie said: we dated for like, a year

calum =] said: damn

calum =] said: what happened tho?

calum =] said: if you don't mind me asking lol

lottie said: idk we just decided to break up because it wasn't working out

lottie said: lmao its okay!!

Calum nodded—though still feeling a little uneasy—at his screen as Charlotte answered his question. He knew it was probably weird for someone to ask a bunch of questions about an ex, especially someone on the internet but he just couldn't help it. In a way, he felt like he needed to ask. He felt like it was some sort of unspoken rule of internet friendship to get them to catch you up on things that happened to them before the internet friendship had bloomed. Either that, or he just needed to be reassured.

calum =] said: on good terms then?

lottie said: yeah, we're still friends

lottie said: barely so, though. like we talk and hang out just not alone lol

As Charlotte explained the state of her and her ex's friendship, Calum felt a wave of relief wash over him. He didn't know why; he barely thought of her that way. Maybe it was just him being selfish, but in the back of his mind he thought that if Charlotte did have a boyfriend and he took her out as much as he did to his, Calum was sure she wouldn't have enough time to go online and talk to him. Enough time to blog a little, maybe, but talking to him? A waste of time.

lottie said: are you with anyone?

lottie said: lmao sorry, that question's a little weird

lottie said: i'm just curious

Calum raised his eyebrows as the messages popped in. He waited for a moment before typing in his response.

calum =] said: yeah actually

calum =] said: it hasn't been long though

calum =] said: 3 months i think

Calum waited for her reply, staring at his phone intently. It wasn't unusual for Charlotte to reply quickly— he had learned that easily in the first few weeks they had been talking. However, as minutes passed, he decided it was pathetic to keep staring at his phone, so he shut it off and turned on his computer, ready to start one of four English essays.

As Calum typed, he couldn't help but over analyse the situation. Why hasn't she said anything? Did he make things awkward by admitting he had a girlfriend? Or was he thinking too hard? She could have easily become preoccupied with something else.

Two hours and three English essays later, Charlotte finally responded. The buzz of his phone made Calum jump and immediately go for his phone. He didn't realize how nervous he had become in a few short hours until his phone was in his hands.

(2:03pm). @lottielove sent you a message!

Calum looked down at his phone for a minute, deciding to carefully pick out which words to use. He felt a little anxious with how long Charlotte took to respond.

calum =] said: she's great

calum =] said: i mean like she's great to hang around with and yeah

lottie said: aw

Calum looked down at his screen, his eyes felt like it was burning Charlotte's last response into his memory permanently. He felt a little conceited as he decided that Charlotte was being extremely dry because he had a girlfriend.

calum =] said: okay topic change because i don't really want to talk about her rn

Or ever, he thought.

calum =] said: how has ur day been??

lottie said: uhhh great!! i might get a kitten

calum =] said: WHY

lottie said: i like kittens??

calum =] said: why didn't you get a puppy, the best pet you could ever have

lottie said: because kittens are cute

calum =] said: im so disappointed

calum =] said: why do i talk to u

lottie said: ily but i love kittens more <333

calum =] said: i am so hurt right now, i can't believe you'd betray me this way smh PUPPIES ARE SO MUCH

calum =] said: CUTER

calum =] said: 140 CHARACTERS CAN SUCK MY DICK

lottie said: omg

a/n: sorry for taking so long to get this chapter up!! i really hope i made it longer than usual to make up for it.

hopefully this all made sense and i didn't over exaggerate something and yeah!!

also i cba to have actually made his dms over the limit because then i'd feel it'd be out of character, so let's just pretend he went over the character limit multiple times :-)
