I trudged back to the dining room, the envelope heavy in my hands. Ella is sure to go even more crazy after she hears the news. I can't wait.
As I entered the dining room, no one bothered to acknowledge my presence - as usual, so I continue walking towards to my step-mother and drop the envelope on the table, next to her plate of half-eaten food.
She looked up at me. "What is this?"
"A letter from the castle." I say bluntly. Honestly, can't she recognise the paper quality of the envelope.
As soon as the words left my mouth, Ella jumped up and scrambled for the envelope, desperate to be the first one who reads its contents. My step-mother, already expecting her daughter's behaviour, had stood from her place at the table and held the envelope above her head in her outstretched arm. But this didn't deter my step-sister at all, in fact it just drove her crazier.
Ella had climbed up onto the table to better reach the envelope, and Elijah had stood on a chair, copying his sister's actions just to annoy her. As I had mentioned before, Ella would go crazy. Elijah just jumped on the bandwagon this time.
My step-mother had had enough of their antics. "That is enough the two of you, get down from there immediately. Honestly, is this is the behaviour you two will be showing then why on earth should I allow you to know the contents of this envelope that was sent from the castle. We must be of utmost importance if we are receiving such a message."
Ugh, she hasn't even opened the envelope yet, and she already thinks it's a marriage proposal for one of her perfect little children. Ella at least have the decency to look sorry for herself. Elijah just smirked.
"Sorry Mother, it's just so exciting! The castle sent us a letter!" Ella squealed. She actually squealed, like a high-pitched screech exited her mouth. And I didn't think she could get any worse.
"Oh, sit down you fool, you don't even know what the letter is about." I say before I can stop myself. Ella gasped in surprise.
"OH MY GOD, Mother did you just hear what she said to me!" Ella shrieks.
I feel my jaw drop and bring my hands to cover my mouth, shocked I let the words slip past my carefully constructed filter. I scramble for an apology before my punishment could get any worse. "I'm so sorry I didn't mean that! Ella I'm sorry!"
"Hmph, sure you are you ungrateful bitch." Ella says, nothing but pure hatred behind her blue eyes.
I choke at Ella's words. That was uncalled for, even if I deserved it. Speaking back in such a manner to her would guarantee nothing less of a slap to the face, even if it was a verbal slap. I have endured worse.
"Ella I'm sorry." I try apologising with her again. She ignores me and turns to her mother, who is looking at me with a smug smile. She knows Ella put me in my place.
