***POTPOURRI***

A long-lasting and fragrant mix of dried herbs and other crushed plant material, potpourri preserves your favorite summer fragrances year round.

Potpourri are usually on show, so choose attractive material. To enhance the scent, add a few drops of aromatic oil.

Combine herbs to create an enticing aroma theme, such as citrus, floral, woody, or culinary.

BASE MATERIALS:

Rose petals, lavender bloom, pine needles, scented geranium leaves, and other aromatic foliage or flowers in plentiful supply are good choices. Gather and dry base materials throughout the season; store in airtight containers until required.

MAKING YOUR OWN:

You will need a non-metallic bowl, a wooden spoon, about 1 quart [1 liter] of base material, several drops of essential oil, and 1 tablespoon of powdered spice. Mix ingredients together; store in a sealed jar.

MERELY MALE:

For a more masculine scent, start your potpourri with a base of mint, pine, or lemon balm. Rest your homemade potpourri for a month before opening.

***SACHETS***

Herb sachets and pillows make wonderful gifts. Choose fabrics and colors to match your furnishings or design a shape to fit a theme, such as Valentine's Day.

Gather together squares of colorful fabric cut in any shape or size. Place several tablespoons of crumbled potpourri in the center of each fabric swatch, gather the edges, and tie with ribbon. Use sachets to scent drawers, closets, linen chests, or luggage, or toss them in the tumble dryer to scent your clothing. When they start to lose their scent, gather several in a glass jar and sprinkle lightly with essential oil. Cover and allow to sit for a week before reusing.

Add flourishes, such as dried lavender sprigs and ribbon to your aromatic sachets.

SWEET DREAMS:

Herb-scented pillows were originally a treatment for inducing sleep. Fill your pillow with a blend that suits your needs--lavender for relaxation; citrus for zing.
