Herbs were one of the first pest controls used by our ancestors. They work safely to control insects and are easily recycled in compost piles.

Citronella oil is used in insect-repelling candles. Sow citrus-scented herbs to ward off bugs.

Plant tansy outside windows and doors; it attracts butterflies and repels pests such as flies and ants.

INSECT REPELLENT FOR SKIN:

1 teaspoon each of essential oils of pennyroyal, citronella, eucalyptus, rosemary, and tansy. 1 cup vegetable oil.

Shake ingredients together and store away from the light. Rub a small amount between the palms of your hands, then apply to any exposed skin. Avoid contact with eyes. Reapply as necessary. Discontinue use if a rash develops.

SOOTHING HERBS:

Dab eucalyptus oil on an insect bite for relief. Alternatively, soak in a bath infused with chamomile leaves or oil.
