As the airplane began its descent into Seattle, the pilot's voice crackled over the speakers,
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are beginning our descent into Seattle's Sea-Tac Airport. We ask that you fasten your seatbelts, secure your luggage, and turn off any electronic devices. Thank you for choosing to fly today with Alaska Airlines."
This was the cue for people to begin rummaging around in their bags and to talk to the person sitting beside them. The noise on the plane gradually increased as people prepared to finally get off what had been a five and a half hour flight from Miami, Florida. It was almost Christmas and people were glad to become preoccupied with their thoughts of family and friends, taking their minds off the recent outbreak of a terrible disease on the East Coast of the United States. This horrible disease would first kill a person with its fever, then reanimate their brains to turn them into mindless, flesh-craving zombies. This disease had taken many cities by storm, but thanks to careful security measures, hadn't escaped to the West Coast yet.
People were so busy with their packing up and their thoughts, that nobody noticed the small, mechanical click, then the slight bump that followed. Nobody thought anything was different until smoke began to fill the cabin, and the nose of the aircraft suddenly dipped down towards the Earth. Realizing the danger, passengers called out to the equally bewildered flight crew, who had no answers. Then, the pilot's calm voice broke through on the intercom,
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are currently experiencing minor engine difficulties. Please remain buckled into your seat and stay calm. Our flight crew is hard at work to fix this. Thank you."
Stating calm is quite hard when you are in a plummeting airplane. Younger passengers began crying while their parents held them tightly, waiting for it all to be over. One woman was simply screaming at the top of her lungs. Less than a minute later, the pilot spoke for the final time,
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot speaking. Im...very sorry to say that we have complete engine failure in one of the main engines. There is nothing we can do at the moment except hope for the best. I am extremely sorry to have to say this, but we must all stay strong. Please, hold on tightly. Thank you all."
As the realization of what was happening dawned on everyone, random strangers began grabbing each other's hands, holding on and hoping to live through it.
The airplane smashed into the side of the mountain seconds later.
