I had a little brother. His name was Benji but I just called him my Boo. He was ten years old the last time I heard of him. But his school was one of the last ones that the news reported on before the public power went out.

It was about three months after the outbreak. Mick on King 5 News was giving an update on each of the schools still standing. It went alphabetically, so for A through L, I was always worried for the report of Benji's school. That day, we had just gotten a huge supply of new food, so everybody was in a good mood. But in this time, days that like never last.

"Good morning folks, I am Mick Oliver and I am going to be your host on the Wednesday morning news. First, a weather report: Today will be foggy, but clear up to be partly sunny in the afternoon. Also, there have been no major outbreaks in the past 24 hours, so police and firefighters are just continuing to manage the King Street herd and the Roosevelt Way herd. They seem to be getting it under control, so that should be taken care of by Friday. Seems like a good day so far, folks! Now, our daily school report. Arbor Heights Elementary is stable, no breaches yet, but a shortage of water. Adams Elementary is doing fine currently. Blanchet High School had a breach last night, but nobody was killed. Cleveland High School...."

I tuned out until the "L"s.

"Laurelhurst Elementary suffered one loss last night, fifth-grader Grant Moriss. Lincoln Elementary was overrun last night. There was a breach on the east side of the school, and there were attempts to evacuate, but it is unlikely there are many, or any, survivors. Im deeply sorry to any relatives or friends of children there. We are hoping for the best. Moving on to Loyal Heights Elementary..."

My body went numb. As I was watching, I had to check with peopld three or four times that they were indeed talking about Lincoln Elementary. They were.

When the apocalypse started I knew Benji and I were going to get out alright. I would find him again and we would build a new life. The realization that that would not ever happen killed me.

I ran out of the class, despite Ms. Gomez's calls for me to stay. I dashed down the hall and into the band room, where there was the top jazz band's rehearsal going on. Nobody noticed as I slipped through the doors of the side room that led upstairs to the storage loft. It's my favorite place in the school.

I sat down on between two timpanis and put my head between my knees. I don't remember how long I stayed there, but eventually I got up and returned to class like nothing had happened.

"Where did you run off to?" Questioned Ms. Gomez, as i opened the doir back to my class. I just shrugged. She was about to say more, but one of my friends spoke up and informed her that my brother's school was the one that got overrun. Ms. Gomez nodded in understanding, then turned back to her lesson.

I didn't say a word for the next four and a half weeks.
