Elijah's P.O.V
"God damn, you fight like a bitch." Nathan laughed as we walked the dirt path back towards my house.
"You're lucky I didn't break of your legs, mutt." I spat back at him with a smirk.
"Yeah, whatever Eli. Long as your calm now." Nathan replied a he looked at me, "what ever happened anyways. You both seemed cozy when you left this morning."
I sighed as our paces slow. Kids zoomed past us running after one another while parents lingered about, minding their own business. I was thankful it was still early enough that we didn't cause as big of a scene as what it could have been this morning. I myself didn't even understand what had happened a couple of hours ago.
"I explained the town to her and how we're able to remain hidden. When we went to go into Maggie's I rubbed my scent off on her. I didn't need any unmated men trying to provoke her or do something stupid. After I hid her scent, we went inside and sat and everything was fine until that annoying and obnoxious blonde waitress showed up."
Nathan made no move to communicate back to me, instead watched me intently as we continued down the trail. I rubbed my hand over my face and through my hair before I continued.
"Everything was fine until that blonde decided to try flirt with me. She looked like a clown with the amount of make up on her face."
"Like your sister does when she goes out?" Nathan laughed out.
"Seriously though. Anyways, Faith was fine until the blonde girl took an interest in me. It was my fault for responding to it. I've went my whole 26 years of life not having a mate, I forgot for a moment. Anyways, I'm sure it upset her and she made a move for the bathroom."
"But she didn't go." Nathan finished my sentence.
"Of course not, she's beautifully stubborn. She never listens. Her scent was hidden by mine so she had the chance to slip out being so far from me. Since we haven't mated our scents haven't mixed so it's obviously harder to keep her pinned to a specific area. Jess went to go see if she was okay and she was gone. By the time I found her she was about to get mixed up with Trent and his friends."
"Shit man, sounds rough. We'll kick their ass on the ice this year don't worry." My second in command laughed as he shoved me.
"Of course we will. I guess I lost it from there. I was mad at her for walking away, for not telling me. I guess I was just worried I'd lose her, you know?"
"I don't, but I'm sure I will when I get a mate. Hopefully she's not as stubborn as yours. You didn't have to lose your cool and claim her." Nathan spoke.
"Fuck," I swore as I yet again ran my hands through my shaggy black hair, "I know, I was just angry at her for what she did when I started it. My temper spiked and I couldn't control my wolf anymore. I wish it happened under difference circumstances."
"Well I don't know why you're telling me this when you should be telling her," he offered as a solution.
I sighed, Jess had said she wasn't doing well with the mark that adorned her neck. I had tried to check on her but Jess said I should keep a distance. Let her come to me. She needed her space and with me around I'm sure it only confused her more.
However, now that I had finally marked her, I knew what she was feeling, how she was thinking. Whenever I tired to focus on her, all I saw was the pain and discomfort I put her in. Jess told me that she had her in the bath smothered with ice because her body was trying to fight off the mark. Her body wasn't quite fully healed and that make accepting my mark that much harder on it.
When we finally walked into the house, I slammed the mahogany door shut behind us. Nathan, like usual, made his way towards the kitchen in search of one of Serayah's meals. I followed behind him and as I crossed the door way, I saw Jess sitting at the counter, a cup of tea in her hands.
I could tell Faith was still in pain, her scent notifying me she was upstairs and thanks to the wolf hearing, I could hear her steady breathing, telling me she was asleep.
"How is she?" I asked as I leaned on the counter with my elbows, eyes locked on Jess.
"Well, she passed out in the tub when I went to check on you two mutts. Thankfully Serayah was there to pull her up. We got her dried off and carried her up the stairs and she's in bed, out cold. Her bites gone down but is still bruised and swollen from the intrusion. We have ice on it as that seemed to help aid the discomfort." Jess informed me before she blew on her hot cup.
"What about today?" I asked her next.
Jess gave me a look as if to say you really don't know and I sighed before letting a few curse words slip out of my mouth.
"You hurt her. She doesn't know what she feels. She's never felt jealous or heart break before but I'm damn sure that's what she's feeling now. She feels betrayed, Elijah. You told her you'd protect her and that you were made for each other. Instead, you decided to flirt back with that blonde skank in front of your mate. Are you stupid?" Jess hissed at me.
"Okay well I-"
"You're a man. You don't ever think before you do something. God, sometimes I'm happy I haven't found my mate yet, because I swear if he's as dumb and as clueless as you have been, I'd probably rip his tail off."
Nathan and I laughed at her only to receive a scowl in return.
"But she's okay?" I asked needing to make sure she hasn't had any harm come to her.
Jess blew out a gust of air in a huff.
"Yeah, she will be. Just give her some time and space. She needs to sort her head out. She's never had anything like this before."
A phone rang somewhere and Nathan retrieved his phone from his pocket and excused himself before he answered it. Jess and I heated up some left over meatloaf and vegetables and silently ate. That was until Nathan came back into the room.
"That was Alpha Ramirez from the blood moon pack. He had an encounter with some rogues. They intercepted 4 of them but the rest got away. He's not sure how many in total but says to be on the look out in case they head this way."
"That's 3 packs over. Shouldn't be an issue but that's not an excuse to rest. Get warrior groups Charlie and Delta to run patrols tonight in rotation and guard the border. If anything happens I want to know about it. We can relieve them with the following warrior groups at sunrise." I ordered Nathan and he took off out the kitchen sliding door.
Although we haven't had a rogue encounter since Faith was brought here, it's not uncommon for them to be wandering about. It was better to be safe than sorry and monitor our land than to be lazy and have a mishap occur.
After we finished eating, we threw our dishes into the sink and each went our own way. I climbed the stairs to go see Faith. The door was shut and I was careful to not make noise as I slowly turned the handle and walked in. Her still frame laid in the middle of the bed, a frown sketched into her forehead from something within her dream. I tugged the blank up further before I went into the bathroom for a shower and got cleaned up. When I was done I dried off and slipped on some shorts before crawling into the bed beside Faith. I kept my distance but found myself stroking the side of her cheek, brushing her brown hair away from her face. The worry line in her forehead flattened out as a my fingers traced her skin and a small smile slipped onto her lips.
Before I fell asleep I found myself whispering out, "I'm so sorry Faith."
...
I woke up the next morning beside a still sleeping Faith. She had shifted closer to me and had her arms wrapped around mine. I laid for a few moments to enjoy the feeling of having her so close but soon enough it was time for me to get up, Nathan had been trying to force himself into my head through the mind link.
'What is it?' I asked annoyed.
'There's been a situation, we need you at the facilities to talk strategy. Rogues have been spotted at the next pack over.' Nathan's voice filled my head.
'I'll be there in a few.' I told him as I looked at Faith.
"I'll see you later princess." I told her as I placed a kiss to her temple before freeing myself and getting up. I changed my shorts and threw on a sweater before wandering downstairs and grabbing a bottle of water and a protein bar. Serayah was cleaning around the house and I informed her what was going on.
"No worries Alpha, I'll keep an eye on her." She told me as I dashed out the door.
I jogged towards the training facilities and let myself in to be greeted by Nathan and our warrior group leaders.
"Alright what's going on?" I demanded as I stood eating my protein bar and listening to the situation at hand.
"Alpha Martins said the rogues have crossed his territory running towards us. They're coming from the south. His warriors tried to stop them but they were too late with tracking their scent. We need to split up into groups to take them out." Jace informed me.
"Alright. Nathan take your men to the east and run the border. Jace, we'll go west and meet you guys in the middle. Have all other warriors to maintain perimeter around our properties. Get women and children into the bunker. Sound the alarm. Nathan, send Samuel, Bryce and Cole to my house. Serayah and Faith are there. They're to watch and protect them with their lives or so help me," I spat as I gave out orders left and right.
"Show time, boys," Steven called out as he howled and began running with the rest of us towards the border. We split up half way and each rushed our respected ways, shifting just before we cleared the grounds.
