We've gone out for coffee before, but this is different. Why? Because this time, he treats me.
"I can't let you pay for me..." I keep saying as he hands the cashier the money. He's laughing at me again.
"Geez, Brianna, let me pay."
"But I can't let you," I protest.
"Why?"
Because that means this qualifies as a date. Well played, Emerson. Well played.
He takes the hibiscus iced tea he got me in the largest size, and a frap for himself. Now that it's over, I could get used to this type of treatment. That's a weeks' allowance saved.
We sit down, me checking my phone because we had a quiz due and mine didn't get submitted so I have to retake it when I get home. Ha.
Anyway, after putting my phone down, I look back up at Cole, who's looking out the window.
"Thanks for the drink," I say, snapping him out of his thoughts. He tips back on his chair, an easy grin on his face.
"It was no problem," he says, as if he's done this many times before. He seems a little surprised that I thanked him, now that I think about it. Maybe he's done way more extravagant things for girls he truly loved. Like taking them to expensive restaurants and giving them a corsage at homecoming or something.
"What were you thinking about?" I ask him, deciding for once to talk about something meaningful and not school and other small talk-y topics.
He shrugs.
"I don't really know. Random stuff."
Cole. I'm really making an effort here. Please just cooperate. Talk to me.
"Gosh, Brianna, it was just a ---ing kiss on the cheek."
"Don't swear," I say automatically. Then my eyes widen in surprise. That wasn't supposed to slip.
Cursing...I don't like it much. It's unnecessary, and I always shun Lex when she does it. Scolding him was kind of a natural thing that slipped, and I don't regret it, but at the same time I feel bad.
Cole smirks, as if he finds this the most absurd thing, but he doesn't burst out laughing.
"I forgot. You hate swearing."
I nod.
"Yeah, I do. But I don't usually scold anyone else except for Alex."
I trace my name into the water droplets that are forming on my cup.
"I don't even know what your talking about, or why you brought up the kiss at all."
He gestures to my face.
"You're still blushing."
Well, makes sense, I guess. I'm naturally pretty pale, so I mean...yeah I'm probably still blushing.
"Ha. Yeah, happens whenever I kiss guys."
He blinks.
"What? I thought you said you've never kissed a guy before."
"I'm joking, dummy."
He nods, but doesn't laugh, which makes the whole thing awkward. Oh gosh...can this be like...over now?
The bell at the door jingles and I look up to see who it is. This time I feel all of the color drain from my face, and I grip the sides of the table. Why here? Why now?
"Brianna?" Cole asks. He turns to see who's at the door and almost does a double-take.
It's my mom.
I really don't....I don't know what's happening. I haven't quite figured out how this is all going to go down, and I don't know if this chapter will even stay in here. But anyway, enjoy!
