Relief washes over the students at Millwood High as the lunch bell rings for the first time this semester. Rushing to get out of science, Mackenzie packs away her things, having a strong urge to breathe fresh air that hasn't been contaminated with Joey Birlem's lethal farts.

It's honestly so disgusting the way that boy lives. To him, it's a joke and the most funny thing you could ever do but to the other students and Mr. Hamilton that are stuck in a classroom with him for the next 50 minutes, it's complete and utter hell.

Making her way to the locker area, Mackenzie hums a song in her head as she puts in her locker combination and makes a switch with her books. She trades science for English and Math for History. The only two classes she has left before her first day of junior year comes to an end.

"Ready to go?".

Mackenzie tilts her head back to look at her impatient best friend who stands with his back against the locker next to hers.

"Almost" she confirms, checking her appearance in the small mirror she's had hanging in her locker since freshman year.

Rolling his eyes, Johnny grows impatient with his smaller best friend. He's hungry and needs lunch immediately.

"Okay you're taking the piss now, come on" he groans, closing her locker door and gently shoving the brunette away from the metal unit.

She giggles as he slings an arm over her shoulder, making sure to tuck her away safely into him. This is the way they always walk together and up until Mackenzie started to accept her feelings, she thought of it as nothing but now? now it's her favourite thing.

Together, the duo walk into the cafeteria and nobody bats an eyelash at them. The whole school knows that they're best friends and they do this type of shit all the time. Nothing out the ordinary.

They part ways, Johnny going to the lunch line and meeting his other best friend Hayden while Mackenzie makes her way over to their table, where the majority of their friends are already seated.

"Hi wifey" Lauren grins, patting the seat next to her. Mackenzie feels relief knowing that Lauren isn't letting this break up get to her too much.

Johnny threatened to kick Noah's ass for hurting his little sister like that but Lauren insisted that the best way for her to get revenge was to simply not care. And she's right.

"I'm tired" Mackenzie pouts, resting her head on Mandla's shoulder. Lauren rolls her eyes. Only Mackenzie could get 9 hours of sleep and still be tired.

"Who's coming to the mall later?" Lauren asks, directing the question at the whole table.

"Got practice and so do the boys" Darius says, biting into his sandwich.

"I have to baby sit ruby" Nadia groans. She'd much rather go to the mall with her friends than babysit her younger sister.

"I'll go, Annie will too" Mandla smiles, taking a sip of
Lauren's apple juice.

After agreeing on meeting up after school and deciding that Annie will drive, the teens start up a new pointless conversation until Johnny and Hayden come over with their lunch.

"Thank you" Mackenzie smiles, taking the tray that Johnny got for her. He smiles in response before taking his own seat opposite her and continuing his conversation with Hayden.

Mackenzie sits in silence, eating her pasta and taking sips of her water while her friends talk amongst themselves. She lets herself bask in the moment, her eyes people watching as students come in and out of the cafeteria. But Mackenzie's smile soon comes to a halt when she sees someone very familiar walk into the lunch area.

There he stands, dressed in black denim and a leather jacket.

Ashton Arbab.

"Are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Lauren whispers into her ear.

Mackenzie gulps, looking her best friend in the eye.

"How is he here? Why is he here?" She asks, frustration clearly present in her tone.

Lauren growls at the boy who makes his way over to the table where Noah and his friends sit.

"Don't let him get to you kenzie, he knows that he can worm his way back in if you let him" Mandla says, catching on to what's happening.

Abruptly, Mackenzie stands and grabs her back. She ignores the calls from her friends as she storms out of the cafeteria and down the hallway.

Before she can take anymore steps, a firm hand grips onto her arm and Mackenzie fears the worst. Her mind however is set at ease when she's enveloped in a hug by none of than Johnny. He lets his hand travel down her long thick hair, soothing her before she starts to panic.

"He's here Johnny, he's back" she sighs, wrapping her own arms around his waist.

Johnny feels himself tense up by her words because he knows what she's talking about.

Mackenzie's ex boyfriend Ashton.

He's out of juvie.
