They walk along a worn deer trail. For a while, silence sits between them. Asher listens for any sound of the men's pursuit, yet the air remains undisturbed. After a moment, then, he jogs forward so he and May walk side by side. Standing in the forest, rather than slouched in the cupboard, Asher realizes she seems much taller. She's almost of a height with him.
"So..." He pulls a leaf of a tree and plays with it, unweaving it by the veins. "Why were those men from the village chasing you?"
The skin along her cheekbones turns violet. Her eyes flick toward him and then stare straight ahead. She pulls out the apple he had seen her holding before and tosses it to him. "I stole."
"Oh..." He looks at the apple. "And they chased you all the way to our farm for this?"
She holds out her arms to show off her skin. "Different," is all she says. She glances at him again. "Eat."
Asher looks down at the apple. He takes a big bite out of it, then hands it back to her. "We can share." She accepts it with a smile and takes a bite as well. Passing the apple between them, they continue along the path.
