They creep down the hill and go in a wide circle around the town. May keeps fearfully looking toward the buildings as if waiting for someone to come after them. The town is peaceful, however. Quail coo in the fence behind one of the houses, and the only human life she sees is a girl running between buildings on an errand for her mother. Soon the town is mostly behind them and they're coming up to the fence surrounding Taylen's house. "We'll go around back," Asher whispers, and begins creeping around the fence. May follows, and feels a breath of relief escape when the lights of the town vanish behind the two-storied house. At last he pauses.

"Stay right here," he whispers. "Just tuck into the grass by this post; no one will see you. I'll knock on Taylen's window, and be back soon."

May looks fearful. "Asher..." she begins. He watches her, waiting. "Will you bring him here?"

Perhaps for the first time, he realizes her fear. Just because he had helped this blue-skinned girl doesn't mean that other boys would, and she knows that. "Only if it's safe," he says. He puts a hand on her shoulder and her eyes snap toward his. "I'll protect you."

A small smile appears on May's face. "Be careful," she whispers.
