May looks at him as if he had sworn. "Just the stars?" she whispers. But then she shakes her head. "The bright moon will rise soon," she says. "They will see us."
Asher looks to the east and sees the telltale moon glow, like a faint mist on the horizon. "We'll hurry, then," he whispers. "Once we're in town it won't matter." Quickly, but careful not to trip over the bumps and holes in the earth, the two of them run along the path. Soon they crest a small rise and the town comes into view, suddenly much closer than it had seemed. Thirty or so buildings cluster around the road. A few, the meadhall and the storehouse, stand in the center a little taller than the others, while several houses are scattered around the town, some distance away. Asher points to one of them that's surrounded by fenced-in fields.
"That's Taylen's house," he whispers. "We've been friends for years. His father owns a large heard, and even two horses; he's the only wealthy man in town. I'm sure they'll have something for us. Come on."
