They're a hundred yards from the town before Asher finally pulls himself free and stops running. May halts too and looks back at him. "May!" he nearly shouts. Her blind fear has left him confused and scared, and he can hear it in his voice. "What are you so afraid of? Who is here? What left that print in the dirt?" May only shakes her head and reaches for his hand again, but he jerks it away. "No," he says, more firmly than he meant. "Tell me what's going on."

She looks Asher dead in the eye, though she herself seems on the verge of tears. "The ones who killed my people," she says. "They came; with their beasts and fire and metal claws, they destroyed my home. I fled; Nintu brought me to safety.

"I thought they wanted my people dead. I thought they hated us. I thought they were far away. But they are here. Other people. Others of you. With beasts and fire, they will kill us if they find us."

Asher is silent for a long time. Finally he says, softly, "Are you sure they're not looking for you?"

May steps back, as if struck. "No," she says. "No...I escaped, they have no way..." she trails off.

Asher looks at her with hard eyes. "You really do bring disaster."
