"A night under the stars? What bullshit."
Dean shook his head at the poster advertising the homecoming at the small school him and Cas were investigating. Sam would have scoffed, probably said something witty about astronomy had he not have stayed behind at the bunker. Usually Dean would have protested to taking Cas on such a minimal hunt, but Sam had been hunting his ass off for the past few weeks and needed a break. Which, for him, meant research.
"I suppose teenagers find it romantic," Cas wondered as they walked past it in the trophy case littered hallway. "Do you...find it to be anything special?"
"What, the stars?" Dean questioned distractedly, adjusting his tie.
"Yes."
"Well, I mean, yeah. I guess." Dean thought for a moment. "Sometimes I feel like the stars are some of the only things in this world I don't have a right to be constantly pissed at, you know?"
"I know the feeling."
"Sam and I used to watch them, after a hunt, or when we were just traveling." Dean continued, happy to reminisce. "We would park baby off the side of the road, in a grassy area, miles away from the closest city. No light pollution. And just look at the stars." Dean shook his head. "Damn, we haven't done that in years."
Cas rolled his eyes. "Still bullshit, huh?"
Dean smiled. "Shut up."

"So this wasn't common behavior for Miss Franks, then?" Dean asked the principal as the two of them sat down after flashing their badges. It seemed like no matter how many hunts Cas went on, he still couldn't figure out which way the badge was supposed to go.
"Absolutely not," she replied sternly. "Katie was fine. As regular as they come. Softball team, homecoming committee, all that jazz. There was nothing...nothing that would make her..."
"Want to rip out her teachers throat?" Cas added helpfully.
She said nothing, tense in her chair.
"You'll have to excuse my partner, Dr. Green. He's just a little shaken up about Mr. Altan's death. Former colleagues."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," she replied hollowly. "You'll be attending the wake, then?"
Dean raised his eyebrows. "Wake?" He glanced at Cas. "Uh, yes, of course we are." he smiled.
She smiled sweetly. "It's so nice to see husbands being supportive of each other," she remarked, clasping her hands in her lap. "My husband's always out of town. Work." She continued to glance between the two of them, conclusions drawing in her mind.
Dean looked at Cas. "What? Oh, no...we're not," he stammered in realization. "We're not partners. I mean we're partners but we're not, like, together."
"Oh!" she said, surprised. "My apologies. It seemed as if..."
"Oh, no." Dean rolled his eyes. "Never."

Cas ultimately decided to ditch the trench coat for the wake. It seemed a little too shabby and informal, so he used one of Sam's suits instead. And by the way Dean kept adjusting Cas' tie, it was no wonder as to why they were commonly mistaken for couple.
