Watch the video above it's really cool and well made.
If you don't feel like watching it that's fine I'll try to sum it up.
The Fermi Paradox is a theory that scientist have in which they believe that there are herat filters to life that prevent us from being successful with life. (Idk how to word that properly). It's kind of like how we are trying to understand why we haven't seen any other signs of life aside from our planet. Maybe there a filter that no other alien civilization has passed and we have.
So this is the Drake equation. It's used to try and find the estimate number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations on our galaxy.
N= The number of communicative civilization in our galaxy.
R= The average rate of star formation our galaxy every year.
Fp= The fraction of those stars that have planets.
Ne= The average number of planets that can support life in stars that have planets.
Fl= The fraction of the those planets that actually develop life.
Fi= The fraction of the planets with life that actually go on to develop intelligent life.
Fc= The fraction of intelligent life that release detectable signs of their existence in space.
L= The expected lifetime of such a civilization for the period that it can communicate across space.
So this is how it starts (It's very broad and probably a bit long but you should get the point.)
1. Dead chemistry that needs to assemble into self replicating patterns. (DNA & RNA)
2. Then it goes to single cell life forms.
3. Multicellular beings
4. Intelligent life (Able to use tools, development of culture and shared knowledge)
5. Species is now the dominant life on its planet (small attempted to reach outside of home planet. This is where we are right now.)
6. Species colonized star system.
7. Species is the dominant in galaxy.
Here's an image of a great filter:
These filters are evolutionary challenges that every living thing goes through. These filters are suppose to be so harsh not even almost all of those who try and go through it fail. Only a small percentage will pass (I think ours is like 0.1% not sure look it up I'm not wikipedia).
They say we have two scenarios in which we are really lucky or we're doomed. But I think personally either way we are doomed. Scenario 1 is that we've already passed the filter and it is behind us meaning we are the first to pass it (At least in our galaxy).
Scenario 2 is that the filter is ahead of us and those who have reach our level of intelligence have died trying to surpass it. It seems to be incredibly dangerous due to the fact that so many civilizations fell to it.
Personally either we we are screwed because even if we have passed one filter there is still another ahead of us. Some think that knowledge is really overrated and not needed. Animals in the and your pet doesn't need super intelligence to survive. they rely upon their instincts and common knowledge or their environment to survive and they are perfectly happy. Solving crossword puzzles and developing nuclear reactors aren't need for survival.
Are these great filters the reason why we have never come in contacts with extraterrestrial beings? Or is it that maybe all those who have oppose the filter died and we have to wait until a new alien civilization reaches to the point in which we are at right now.
Will these great filters be super bacteria? Our sun exploding and engulfing our earth? Will it be our technology that end us?
Tell me what you think!
