Chapter 7
"Oh my gosh!"
I had never gotten so surprised to a point where I fell flat on my butt, but apparently there was a first time for everything.
The familiar laugh that ensued didn't make the situation any better.
I glared up at his cackling figure with pure fury. "Not funny," I grumbled.
But of course he continued to laugh, not even offering his hand to help me up like a real man should.
Then again, Avery Louis was basically part ape.
"Who were you hiding from?" He asked as he watched me get up and dust off my pants.
I looked around him slightly to see if Brandon was still lurking around. He wasn't in sight. "No one," I lied. "Hey, I need my phone back." I went straight for it. Now I wouldn't have to seem like a stalker and pop up at his house.
He didn't say anything at first. Just stared down at me with a slight smirk on his lips. "Tell me who you were hiding from first," he negotiated.
"Avery give me my phone back or I'm telling Mr. Hankerson that you stole it."
He laughed sarcastically then. "I am above the law baby girl." However, he didn't say 'baby girl' in that sickly sweet tone most guys would use when they called a girl that; it was more patronizing.
"I genuinely don't get how you haven't gotten expelled yet. You walk around like this school is a freaking wrestling arena."
"Mr. Hankerson wouldn't dare let a stain touch my record," he said bitterly. I didn't know what part of that was bad enough to make him bitter about it, but he had his own reasons I guessed.
"How come?" I asked him.
He stared down at me for a long while but I didn't hold the look. I didn't know why I had been so bold and asked him all those questions like he was a dear friend of mine.
He was the exact opposite actually. He was my enemy. He stole from me!
"I answered enough of your questions already; tell me who you were running from." Avery said, avoiding my request for further explanation. I really wanted to know the deal between Mr. Hankerson and him.
"Why? So you can go beat him up to?"
Avery looked insulted in the slightest, then rolled his eyes before backing up and turning away. My eyes went wide as I watched him walk away.
I needed my phone back and he was attempting to leave. I knew chasing after him was the only thing to do at that point but what if he lashed out on me once I got close?
With a groan, I chased after him anyway. "Wait," I called to him and surprisingly, he did what I asked. Once I finally reached and stepped in front of him I was breathing slightly hard, which was utterly embarrassing. "I really need my phone back." I told him in between my heavy pants.
He kind of looked away from me. "Well I don't have it on me."
My heart sank into my belly. I couldn't go one more day lying to my mom about my phone; I didn't like the feeling of repeatedly lying to her. "You don't understand. I really need that back. My mom will slaughter me if she finds out that I lost it."
Finally his eyes were back on me, completely amused, as a smirk also formed on his lips. "So what do I get in return of this oh so important phone then?"
My heart fell into my gut. "What?" I asked him breathlessly.
He crossed his arms over his chest. "Yeah what do I get in return of the phone? I have to get something in return don't you think?" He chuckled.
I shook my head and squinted at him. "I owe you for something you stole?" The disbelief was clear as a crystal in my voice.
With his arms still crossed, he shrugged.
"Okay, I'll tell you who I was hiding away from." I told him but he had already begun to shake his head before I even finished my statement.
My eyebrows furrowed. "I no longer care about that. How about in return for the phone, I get to take you somewhere this weekend?" The way he spoke, it wasn't really a question, it was more of his deal in negotiating.
"No," I exclaimed. "Just give me back my phone. What is your problem?" He was definitely insane. I didn't even know how I got myself into that situation with him.
"No deal, no phone," He stated firmly. "Plus if you don't agree I will go up and down that apartment complex, screaming your name. Natalie Briggs, Natalie Briggs, Natalie Briggs until you come out to deal with me." He yelled out my name repeatedly to prove his point and my heart sank.
My eyes began to water, if he did that and my mom happened to see him calling out my name, I would probably be disowned on the spot. "I have to babysit my brother and sister on the weekends while my mom goes to work." I explained to him, hoping that he would understand.
"They can watch themselves, how old are they?" He asked me.
I copied him and folded my arm over my chest, my anger and impatience rising." My little brother is older and he's only twelve."
"Well bring them with you, my maid can watch them."
I shook my head. "No, I can't let a stranger watch them! Are you insane?"
"Look, I'm trying to be nice here. Either you want your phone or not."
I wanted to cry. I should've never got into his car; the first time or the second. None of this would be happening if I didn't. "Okay." I finally gave in.
He looked pleased by my settlement and even grinned. I wish I could've punched him with no consequences. "Follow me then."
I did as told and followed him all the way downstairs to the first floor. It wasn't until I saw him nearing the corridors to exit the school that I stopped and of course he noticed.
"What?" He asked, seeming annoyed.
Suddenly all the bravery I had when I talked to Avery earlier vanished. "I can't leave." I murmured. This was going too far. I was hanging around, unwillingly, with the one person I knew my mom wanted me to stay away from and now he wanted me to hop off campus. I was scared. I didn't want to get caught and punished like he always was.
He stepped up closer to me, his face scrunched up. "I didn't catch any of that. What did you say?"
His proximity, added onto my nerves, started to make me shake a little. I stared down at his feet. "I-I can't skip school."
"I don't think you noticed but you've just about missed fifth period completely. Unless you wanna go back up there, get detention, and miss your only opportunity to get your phone back. Besides I'll just have Mr. Hankerson mark you excused for the rest of the day. Simple."
I didn't really doubt him on that. Although he was very manipulative, he didn't seem all that like a liar. Plus, he had some odd relationship with Mr. Hankerson that I don't think anyone else has really noticed.
But I still was terrified of leaving early.
"Just imagine your mom came and got you for an early pick up." He told me, probably trying to help me through my clear angst.
The last time my mom came and got me early was the same day my dad... I shook my head slightly so I could not reminisce.
I nodded my head numbly in response and started to follow him despite how I felt.
Next thing I knew, we were in his car zooming down a highway. It wasn't until he made a turn into a very well kept and nice neighborhood that I snapped back from my daze.
I was going to Avery Louis' house!
In a way I was kind of excited. I've never been in an actual home that had probably 2-3 stories; I only ever saw them on those unrealistic family shows and movies.
Then again, anything could happen once I stepped into his territory.
