Prologue

~

With the windows down, the outside air flew into the car as the automobile drove down the freeway, cooling off the two boys that had already been cooped up in the car for two hours, on their way home from a brilliant concert.

The boys belted out the lyrics to every song that played on the radio as they drove home. Left over adrenaline from the concert pumped through their veins, leaving them smiling and wide awake. Being best mates, the boys had had plenty of fun, unforgettable moments together, but neither could deny that the concert was the best.

The younger of the two stopped singing and looked at his friend, listening to his voice as the words of the nameless song playing rolled off his tongue with ease. "You know, Lou," the younger lad began, "you have an amazing voice."

Louis took his eyes off the road momentarily as they exited onto an empty highway surrounded by grass to smile at his younger friend. "Thanks, Hazza," Louis said, using the nickname he appointed his best friend.

Harry grinned back at Louis then the two of them began singing the song that came on the radio next.

Another half an hour of driving passed, and both boys began feeling the effect of the concert, fatigue slipping into their skin. Just another hour until they would get to their hometown, Doncaster. Harry noticed Louis' eyes beginning to droop and decided to start up a conversation to keep them both awake. "I can't believe you're going to Uni next month."

Louis sent a sympathetic smile tto his friend who was smiling sadly, his bottom lip giving a slight pout. "Oh, Haz. I'm not abandoning you. I'll still come and visit a lot."

"Promise?" Harry questioned hopefully.

To show just how serious he was, Louis took his eyes off the empty road and looked into Harry's eyes."I pro-"

"Louis, look out!" Harry suddenly shouted, eyes wide, and pointing out the windshield, frightened. Blue eyes followed the direction Harry's slender finger pointed as a truck coming the opposite way swayed into their lane. Gasping, Louis' grip on the steering wheel tightened, turning his knuckles white as he turned it to swerve around the large truck, knowing there wasn't enough time to his the breaks or honk. In that moment, though, the other driver seemed to have realized they were driving in the wrong lane and moved to the correct lane, coming straight at Louis' car.

Pain as blinding as the truck's headlights spiked through Louis' legs, causing him to scream out. The car spun in circles and Louis turned the steering wheel the opposite way, praying that it will still the car. The van only came to a stop when it crashed into a lone tree on Harry's side.

Breathing heavily, Louis opened his door and attempted to step out, but immediately collapsed due to the excruciating pain reverberating from his legs.

"Harry," he panted breathlessly, knowing he needed to help his best friend. Not only had the truck crashed into the car on Harry's side, but that was also where the car collided into the tree.

Louis reached his hand down to his trousers pockets, fumbling for his mobile. He gently pulled it out of his pocket, careful about his leg. He dialled for help, but had a hard time pressing the buttons as his hands shook and his vision became blurry. He brought the phone to his ear and listened to the ringing, begging for someone to pick the phone up. Not for his sake, but for Harry's.

"What is your emergency?" someone finally asked on the other line.

"There's been an accident," Louis gasped out, trying to block out the pain in his legs. He told the woman on the other end of his whereabouts, begging for them to come fast.

As the lady on the other end began explaining to Louis to remain calm and to keep talking, Louis' vision began blackening, and he started going numb as he sunk into oblivion.

A scream left Louis' mouth as someone moved his legs, snapping him back to consciousness in the worst way possible.

Louis was delicately placed on a gurney which then started moving toward an ambulance. "Harry," he whispered, having no strength to say anything else. But the person guiding his stretcher must have understood him because she nodded and shouted something to her colleagues.

Louis' stretcher was moved into an ambulence, and just before the doors closed, Louis spotted a limp figure being pulled out of the car, blood all over him.

On the ride to the hospital, tears spilled from Louis' eyes as he prayed and prayed that Harry would be okay. By the time the ambulance reached the hospital, Louis was unconscious again.

The next time Louis awoke, he was on a bed in a sickeningly white room. Louis attempted to move into a sitting position, but sudden pain in his legs stopped him, causing him to shout. The scene of the crash suddenly flashed through Louis' mind as he remembered seeing Harry's bloody, limp form.

A nurse scurried into the room and checked all Louis' vitals, ignoring his many questions and pleas about Harry. Then she left without a word.

Tears of concern, frustration, and guilt filled Louis' eyes. What had happened to Harry? Was he okay? None of this would have happened if Louis had watched the road and saw the approaching reckless driver. Harry could be dead because of him.

There was a soft knock on Louis' open door and Louis watched his mum and four sisters slowly walk into the room, all coming to stand around Louis' bed, looking at him with worry and sorrow. But they shouldn't be sad! Louis is alive, is awake. Louis then figured out that they may not be sad because of him.

Louis swallowed thickly before looking up at his mother. "M-mum? What happened to Harry?"

Immediately, all his sisters looked anywhere but at him, obvious tears in their eyes. Louis turned back to his mother with wide eyes, awaiting the dreadful answer he knew was coming. In a shaky voice, his mother said, "The accident was very, very bad, Louis. You're lucky you're okay." Her voice cracked. Louis felt a spark of anger alight in the pit of his stomach. He already knew it was bad and that he was alive, but what about Harry? Louis watched his mum blink rapidly as if blinking back tears. "Ha-Harry took most of the damage. It, uh, it doesn't look well for him. His, uh, doctor, he told us that it seems Harry probably won't make it." Tears spilled down her cheeks and Louis could hear the sobs of his sisters who had all come to love Harry like a brother.

But this couldn't be happening. This must be some sick joke. Louis shook his head rapidly, unbelieving. This kind of dreadful stuff only happened in the movies. No, Harry was okay. He had to be okay.

Louis' mum placed her hands on Louis' shoulder to try to calm him down, but Louis pulled away, resentment toward his lying mother reaching the surface. "No! Stop lying!" Rivers of tears streamed down his faceI should be the one on my death bed, Louis couldn't help but think.

Louis felt the comforting arms of his mother wrap around him, but he shoved them away. He didn't want her comfort. He wanted Harry to be okay. He needed Harry to be okay. Accepting comfort would be accepting Harry's fate, and Louis couldn't do that. Harry was only sixteen, this couldn't be happening. He hadn't even lived yet. He couldn't give up on Harry. His mum persisted, however, and repeatedly wrapped her arms around her son after every shove Louis gave them until he finally lost the energy to fight her and sat there, crying. Soon, his sisters were hugging him as well, careful not to touch his legs.

For hours, the family hugged each other and cried over the loss of one of their own.
