Hello, all. So, I know a ton of you are really pissed at Zayn, but don't be too harsh on his character, okay? It was a lot of information to suddenly take in that was the last thing he could have ever expected. I know you're mad at him, but just take a deep breath and calm down because it was a sudden blow.

Enjoy(:

Chapter 9

~

Maybe I should have called after him. Maybe I should have begged him to see things from my point of view. Maybe I should have waited until we returned to the dorm to throw all that at him. Maybe I should have told him a different way. Maybe I shouldn't have told him at all.

But maybe I should have told him the truth in the first place.

I know I shouldn't be sitting alone on the sidewalk without a soul in sight in just a pair of wet swim trunks, shivering so violently my teeth chatter. Yet, I can't bring myself to get to my feet and go back to the party to retrieve my things. My pride won't let me.

I snort spitefully into the cold darkness. Because, honestly, who else would murder their best friend, tell their roommate two years later, then be left alone in the dark, but is too proud to swallow their dignity and go get their shirt because they know their roommate is near it.

"Pathetic," I whisper to myself through my chattering teeth. I rub my shaking hands together in attempt to conduct some heat. My breaths come out in little foggy wisps in front of my face, warming the air temporarily before vanishing. As pathetic as I know I am, I still can't muster the courage to return to the party. I just wish Harry and Niall would get bored and come wandering out to my rescue.

Something warm falls around my shoulders suddenly and I start, peering upward at my new companion who sinks to the sidewalk beside me. "Bit chilly to be half naked, don't you think?" I shrug, grabbing at the large jacket and pulling it tighter around me, sighing at the warmth it provides me. The soft fabric smells of vanilla with a hidden spice mixed in. I feel my visitor shift a bit and notice his eyes are now trained on the side of my face as I look out across the street to a flickering street light. "You know, this is a pretty dodgy neighborhood. You shouldn't be out here on your own."

"What do you want, Harry?" I snap, glaring at the boy who managed to ruin my life just by living. God, this is all so fucked up. I look back out across the street and my voice takes on a softer tone. "Why don't you just go back to the party with Niall and them? I'm sure you would have a lot more fun there with your friends than out here with me."

Harry shoves his shoulder into mine playfully, "Well, maybe I consider you a friend-"

"You don't even know me," I counter, whispering into the silent street. He doesn't know I used to be his friend. He doesn't know how we used to be inseparable. He doesn't know I thought I killed him.

I can feel Harry stare holes into the side of my face, but I don't dare glance his way, not feeling quiet stable enough to look at my best mate that doesn't know anything about me. "Maybe I want to."

My head jerks to the side and blue meets green, just staring and wondering. His eyes are intense as they stare into mine, and I don't move a muscle, almost afraid to. Afraid that I'll shatter the moment. As those green irises seem to stare into the very depths of my soul, I can't help but wonder if a part of him - just a single little nerve - remembers me. Remembers the all-nighters we used to pull as we contemplated life. If he remembers the secrets we shared inside forts that seemed impenetrable. If he at all remembers looking into my blue eyes just as he is now.
