Chapter 1
~
"Mum," I whine as her arms remain locked around me, almost tight enough to cut off my breathing. "I'll see you Christmas Holiday. That's not too far from now." Mum always hated goodbyes, and even though I'm about to start my third year at University, she still cries into my neck, begging me to stay home.
I have to pry her arms off me in order for her to let me go which immediately results to her giving out body shaking sobs. "I-I'm sorry, Boo. I'm just going to miss you so much," she whispers.
Sighing, I pull my two duffel bags out of the car and close the door. "Bye, Mum," I whisper, kissing her cheek, then walk away before she can envelop me in another bone crunching hug.
Repositioning my bags, I set off across campus, dodging skateboarders, flying footballs, and students that don't watch where they're going. Numerous times, I have to jump out of the way of someone running right at me as if they think they can run straight through me.
Finally, I reach the dorms which are even crazier than how it was outside. In the halls, suitcases and bags lie on the floor as students attempt to find their rooms. A trio of boys bounce a football to each other in the middle of the hall, narrowly avoiding passing students. And every now and again, a small fight or argument would break out but would settle down seconds later.
I make my way up a flight of stairs to the second floor which is just as crowded and crazy as the first; if not, more so. I stalk down the hall, hopping over stray luggage and ducking under a frisbee coming straight for my head, all in the while searching for room 237. Eventually, I find the room and slip the key I had gotten for it at orientation into the lock and opening the door. I step into the room and quickly close the door behind me to stop a random football from flying in unannounced. That happened first year and had hit me on the back of the head rather hard, and since then, I've made sure the door is always closed.
"Hey, Lou," my roommate, Zayn greets me as I throw my bags on the open bed. As soon as I put all my luggage on the mattress, I spin around and throw my arms around my best mate of two years, causing him to laugh. "Calm down, Lou. We only went a few months without seeing each other."
Now I know how my mum feels. A few months is a long time, I think. "Shut up, Zayn, and just hug me back," I scold. Zayn chuckles and wraps his arms around me, returning the hug. "Well come on, Bradford Bad Boy," I tease, using his nickname and stepping out of the hug, "Let's unpack."
We turn to our separate beds and unzip our bags to begin unpacking. We throw our fancywear and jackets into the closet, but fold everything else into the two small dressers. Once we finish with our clothing, we unpack our pictures and hang them up on the walls or set them on the bed tables.
After we finally finish, we decide to head to the cafe on campus for some tea. As soon as we step out in the hall, we hear a thick Irish accent coming from a short blond boy shout, "Give me back my burger, you tosser," before disappearing into a room. Zayn and I glance at each other, confused, then shrug and continue on our way to the cafe.
"Two Yorkshire Teas, please," I order when we reach the front of the line in the cafe. The barista makes the drinks and hands them to me. "Cheers," I say, handing a few notes to her. Zayn takes his drink from me then leads me to a table in the corner next to the windows.
