It was the beginning of winter break and finally, the day was here. Natalie impatiently sat by the window coated in frost, obscuring her view of the street. With her suitcase packed and stationed at the door, all Natalie needed to do was wait for the Mitchells to arrive. She had been waiting for five minutes but it felt like an eternity.

"You know, staring out the window isn't going to make them come any faster," Natalie turned to see Aunt Cass leaning against the doorway, a steaming mug of coffee in her hand and a teasing smirk on her face.

Natalie rolled her eyes but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at her lips. "You don't know that. I have a theory Zach and I have a telepathic connection." Natalie shook her head as she dropped onto the armchair by the window. "Last week, we said the exact same thing at the exact same time like, five times."

"Oh, silly me. Obviously, there is a telepathic connection between you two. It's the only explanation for why you're so close." Aunt Cass mocked playfully, taking a sip of her coffee.

Who knows? Maybe it was an explanation for the relationship between the two teens. They were so different from one another. Zach Mitchell was the most aloof person Natalie had ever met, never showing interest in anything but pretty girls. Natalie, however, was warm and sociable. For her, a bee landing on a flower will immediately catch Natalie's interest and entertain her for ages. Zach would rather swat the bee away and get on with whatever he was doing on his phone.

"Zach's mom called, said they'll be here soon. Zach was saying goodbye to his girlfriend." Natalie couldn't stop her scoff as Aunt Cass explained why the Mitchells were running late.

Zach's girlfriend; Natalie couldn't stand the girl. She wrapped herself around Zach closer than cling film and was just as transparent. She would gaze through her overly made-up eyes with her cloying vapidity, simpering softly until he told a joke. Then she would giggle like she's three and a half.

"Jealousy isn't a good colour on you, Nat,"

Natalie hadn't realised she had been glaring out the window until Aunt Cass's sniggers registered in her head. Natalie turned to face her aunt incredulously, mouth fallen open in offence. "I am not jealous of Makayla Cogan," she snapped, taking Aunt Cass's joke a little too seriously.

Aunt Cass only let her smirk widen, knowing that her niece wasn't truly angry with her. "But you do like Zach?"

Natalie turned her head to look back out the window with pursed lips. Natalie had told Zach plenty of times how much she didn't like Makayla. Well, not exactly in those words but with all the mocking and jabs she made towards the girl, it would be impossible for him not to take the hint.

Then again, it was Zach. The boy Natalie had been pining after every since puberty hit her like a train. Natalie hadn't told Zach how she felt and she was certain she never would. She couldn't say anything about it unless she wanted to put their fourteen-year friendship at risk. That was something she won't do. Friends like Zach Mitchell didn't come along too often.
