I wake up in my bedroom, knowing another stupid day was about to shift its way onto my back. I live in a flat with Bryan, who is practically a human radiator, so he keeps the windows open overnight therefore I tend to wake up uncomfortably swatting half-dead moths and 'daddy long-legs' as everyone calls them. But this morning was different. No flies, no kettle being boiled, no slamming of bathroom doors but just, quiet. I get up and look at my clock.

I scratch my head and pull my hand from the tangles of hair as I slam back down in my bed. I couldn't go back to sleep, I've tried it too many times before but nothing happened. So I just sat there. I sat until 6:30 when Bryan burst through the door.

"C'mon Johnnie, you're going today. I don't care how much of a 'pulled muscle in your stomach' you have. You're getting up." Bryan spat whilst pulling the covers off of my bed. I lied there, pulling the covers back over my head and moaning. Yes I had had the past few days off but I couldn't stand all the 'you faggot, go away, no one likes you', 'stupid emo, go cut somewhere else' and especially, I love this one 'unbutton your blazer you look like a geek'. Even though I was gay, this didn't bug me. But they didn't need to know that I am... I'd missed some of this at the weekends, it gave me a chance to get out of lessons as I had been feeling 'very unwell'. "Bryan, I've been up since half five. Let me have half an hour." I moaned. He sighed and brushed past my bed to open the blinds. I shielded my eyes from the sunlight and sat up, taking a sip of my water I said "Dude, did you ever get bullied? Y'know, being friends with a popular kid?". He looked at me strangely.

"No, why. Is someone hurting you? I wondered why you came home with marks on your shirt."

"No Bryan, they don't hurt me. Relax, all they do is ask me to unbutton my blazer. Thats all."

He looked at me worryingly. "I worry you go to school and because I can't see you, you get taken advantage of. Promise me you won't let them hurt you."

"Promise."

I got up and brushed past Bryan, slightly smiling at him to reassure him that I was fine. I passed through and shut the bathroom door. I looked into my eyes in the mirror. "Today" I whispered to my mirror form "I'm going to try something new. I'm going to prove those guys wrong and face them.". It had been a weekend since I last saw the popular gang, and I wasn't excited. I dragged my clothes out of the airing cupboard and put them on. I shoved my blazer on without the buttons done up and looked at myself. I hate these blazers, going to a private school was no different to a public school- only you had to wear a uniform. The uniform was a dull burgundy colour, not the nicest. I decided to tease my dark hair even more than usual, then brushed it down slightly. I looked so different, I looked almost like one of them.

[ 7:30 ]

I slowly walked to the kitchen to discover Bryan quickly munching a piece of lightly buttered toast. The blinds were open and the sun started to pour in. I made myself some cereal and ate it dry. I started to make a checklist of what was in my blazer pockets: I found a mickey mouse pen I got from Paris, 2 black biros and 2 black pencils. In my zipper pocket I found a scientific calculator, pencil sharpener, tipex, a pug shaped rubber and a crumpled timetable. I have everything I need. Well, apart from my sanity.

[ 8:00 ]

I shouted at Bryan "We need to go, if not we're going to be late!".

"Alright, I'm coming. There's no need to shout, I'm right here." He said jokingly. I wasn't joking. As we picked up our bags and began to leave, Bryan forgets he needs his phone and runs back up to the flat to get it. And finally he comes back down wasting 5 minutes. As we pull away I tie my shoelace and adjust my bag before putting my seatbelt on. Bryan looked me up and down. "Johnnie, is this something they told you to do?"

"No, dude, I'm trying something new today. I wanna see what they think."

"Alright..." he mumbled back.
