Paul looked around uneasily, fearing they might still be close, hearing their conversation. "D-Dad?" Lotus tried to make eye contact with her father.
"We have to go..." He whispered, so quietly that Lotus could barely hear it. The man started to walk away but stopped, knowing the girl wouldn't follow him. "I'll tell you everything... Everything on the road. I promise..." We slowly walked over to her, like he feared she might run away. "Pinkie-promise?"
Lotus looked at her father's finger. He wouldn't break their promise, would he? She slowly wrapped her own finger around his. "Pinkie-promise..."
After that, it all happened fast. Bags, door, stairs, car and road.
It was quiet. Too quiet. The radio was broken. You could feel the tension.
Ever heard of the saying: you could cut the tension with a knife? That how it felt for Lotus, to be in car with her father, waiting for the truth. Her window was slightly open, the wind gently brushing her hair. She was tapping her fingers to one of the songs that were stuck in her head.
Paul cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "Well... I guess I should keep my promise..." He shifted a bit in his seat. "Long ago, before you were born. I... I had a job..."
He stopped talking, acting like he was very focused on the turn he was taking. "And... Euhm... My job was... I mean... He always told us what to do... And we had to do it... No questions asked..."
He stopped the car at a crossroad and looked at both sides before crossing the street. "I needed money... And I was payed well for that job... All I had to do was to fulfill the mission... God... I didn't know it would get that bad, you know? I didn't know how dark my life would get... How many lifes I would have to take..."
The man whispered the last part, but Lotus could still hear the pain in it. She placed her hand on the one that was resting on his lap. He isn't the man he was anymore, Lotus knew that. She could see it in his eyes. Paul kept staring the road. "I did horroble things, Lou... I... I'm a monster..."
He took at deep breath. "I stopped working for them... I-It was on my last mission... At the hospital... When I met you..."He drove up to a small motel and stopped the car. "We should get inside..." He took their bags and payed a room for the two of them.
Room 105. One bed at the right side of the room, with two bedside table in each side of it. A window, with next to it a table with a chair. A door, opposite to the bed, probably to the bathroom. A small kitchen, on the left side, with a dining table.
Paul placed the bags on the bed, sat down and put his head in his hands. Lotus stayed next to the closed door, letting everything sink in. All the secrets, she still had some questions. But when she looked at her father, he looked so desperate, she couldn't bring it to her heart to ask more about it.
The girl sat next to him and wrapped her arms around him. "We'll figure it out, Dad. We'll figure it out..."
