Jace POV

"So let me get this straight— you spent 100k on a painting?" Scarlett eyed the new addition to my office mounted on the wall.

"It's one of a kind, call it an impulse buy." I said as I sat back in the chair at my desk scribbling down notes from my most recent study.

"But a wolf?" Scarlett sneered, "The irony." She crossed her arms.

"You don't live here little sis, so no need to worry."

"And thank God. So what did you find?" She asked walking over, peering over my shoulder to get a better look of the recent data.

"This is how much closer we are?" She raised an eyebrow. "Jace that's nothing." She snapped.

"It takes time Scarlett, you know that. This isn't a process that you can rush and expect perfect results overnight."

"Well, we need to rush. These mongrels are completely useless." She stomped over to one of the windows and peered out. I sighed, annoyed with her childish behavior.

"Give it more time Scarlett." My voice hard as I snapped the laptop closed.

"How much more time do you think dad has Jace?" Her voice tired as she didn't even try to meet my gaze.

"Don't start that again. It doesn't change anything."

"If we don't get someone stronger— dad wont even live to his birthday next month."

"You don't think I'm well aware of that?" I bit.

She finally turned towards me, "You said we would find the alpha, he's strong and can be the breakthrough for all of this— for dad, and so many other people. Isn't that what you want?" Her voice hard.

"And we will. We have to be strategic about this Scarlett, one slip up would coast us everything."

"Well, it better soon. It's only a matter of time before these mutts are just as useless to us as they are in society."

Her phone buzzed from inside her pocket. She took it out and glanced at it. "They're here." She turned swiftly on her heel and walked out the double doors. Her heels clicking along the tile as she descended down the hallway.

I threw my glasses to the side as I leaned back in my chair. The wolf portrait stared down at me. My mind recalled Bea. The second I walked into the gallery that night something was different. The air seemed to be thicker as it pulled me in its own direction, only to find her. She was talking to a the auctioneer. I was immediately drawn to her in a way I couldn't describe.

Her auburn hair trailed well below her waist, her hour glass figure fit perfectly with her 5'2 stature. Her milky skin seemed soft to the touch. Her smile- God that smile, dimples framed each side, and those full pink lips were too inviting. When her deep brown doe eyes met mine... damn, I lost all train of thought. I knew exactly what she was, and the hunter in me should have resent her and want to kill her. That feeling wasn't there as I looked at her.

Instead, my chest grew warm, the warmth overwhelmed my entire being. It was a feeling I have never felt before. A light buzz sounded in my ears, and my mind felt intoxicated.

With every fiber of my being I unsuccessfully pushed these feelings away. The only reason I went there that night was to capture her, and confirm my suspicion about her being of alpha decent.  When we moved back to this land, we knew of the wolves here. We had been tracking them since our arrival 3 weeks ago.

One of my hunters had alerted me of this women and her whereabouts. They had thought she was close to the alpha or part of the family. They kept high security around members of their pack and It was hard to get close enough to know for sure. I promised I would take care of it.

I could have easily taken her that night. She was alone with me, that would have been my opportunity. Possibly having the alphas daughter in my reach... I had every intention to, but when I got the chance... I couldn't. Why the fuck couldn't I do it?

As I sat alone in my office, I forced myself to stop thinking about her in this way, I pushed the warm feelings far away. I was determined to find out if the blood of an alpha coursed through her veins.

She would mean only one thing to me, a cure.
