"So you're really going?" you asked him sadly.

Billy nodded slowly and sadly. You two had been seeing each other for a few months and as soon as his 18th birthday came and went you knew he was planning to go back to California, when you'd met it was all he'd spoken about, a glint of excitement and hope in his eyes, happy that he'd finally be able to return home and leave this shithole town of Hawkins behind him.

"It's what I've wanted since before I met you." he explained.

You were sad, but not surprised. He hated this town more than anything, he had told you time and time again, in the back of his car, in your bed in the mornings he spoke about how he couldn't wait to leave, but still, it hurt. You had become accustomed to his presence, his scent of cologne and cigarettes on your clothes, the way the laughter lines trailed his face when the pair of you shared a dumb joke, his loud music and the way he acted macho in front of everyone and you would smile to yourself knowing that behind closed doors he was one of the softest and gentlest people you had ever met. He had asked you once to come with him, but you had family here and were going to college close by, the arrangement just wouldn't suit and you knew Billy Hargrove wasn't suited for long distance.

"I'll miss you" you told him softly as he rested his chin in your hair while he held you.

"I guess I'll miss you too." he whispered back.

You watched as he packed a bag, trying to hold back tears in silence. When he saw you almost crying he sighed and shook his head.

"You knew this day would come sweetheart." he said quietly, cupping your face gently.

"I know" you replied, blinking hard as tears fell.

He took your hand and lead you outside to his Camaro where the trunk was open, full of his belongings. His dad watching from the main window, arms folded and a stern look on his face.

"Will you call?" you asked, your voice cracking as he placed a soft hand on your cheek.

"Of course." he replied, his tone full of false promises, you knew he would call a couple of times for the first few weeks he was there but then it would dwindle and fade, leaving you wondering whatever happened to him.

"Bye baby" he pressed a goodbye kiss to your lips and gave you one last longing look.

He held your gaze for a while before he tore himself away and nodded sadly.

"Goodbye Billy." you said, sniffing, watching him climb into his car. He hesitated for a second before the engine roared to life and his car rolled out of the driveway.

Billy looked back into his review at you with damp eyes and sighed.

"Take care, idiot." you mumbled quietly as the all too familiar blue Camaro disappeared out of sight.
