Chapter 1

It is often said that you find love when you least expect it. Atleast that's what i used to think and hoped would be true. Maybe i was doing it all wrong all along. I'm going to turn 25 in few weeks and love and I haven't even introduced ourselves to each other.

Not everything is sad about my life though. I love writing.Writing novels online has been something that I love to do and it has led me to my current job working in the local newspaper. It pays the bills and i also get time to write my novels.

The only thing that keeps me up at night is that the characters in my novels somehow end up having a happily ever after and i can't seem to hold on to a relationship. It's not that i haven't tried, but everytime i try to talk to a guy, the only words that come out are " hiiiiiiiii.... I got to go..... Byeee". Well, now you know why I'm still single.

All things considered, i might be alone but I'm far from lonely, thanks to my best friend Amanda aka my flatmate and childhood buddy. She's a singer and song writer and has a permanent slot to perform at our local restaurant where she's more than happy to sing. She also has her own YouTube channel where she posts most of her original songs. She has a lot of subscribers but I'll always be her number one fan.

As for our families, they are as close as families can get without actually being related by blood. Our mom's were best friends since they were kids so it was natural or maybe meant to be that me and Amanda have been brought up like sisters. My name Lucy, is also very fitting as it was chosen by Aunt Cindy, who is Amanda's mom and my mom Mandy loved it as soon as it was suggested. It would have been Amanda's name but i had the fortune to be born a day earlier than her. So, its obvious that we grew up really close and even now live together because neither one of us would have it any other way. Our families live a few blocks away so they don't really worry about us that much.

If you haven't guessed already Amanda is as single as i am. Not that Amanda has had the same luck as me but she has been single for a year now. Her last relationship really took a toll on her and it ended badly. But she's happy now and we both love our jobs, our families and life couldn't be better.

We live in a small town called Middletown which is three hours away from the city. This has been our home and we have never considered moving. Somehow this small town has always been enough and we couldn't imagine being so far away from our families. Our cozy little two bedroom apartment has become our home. We moved in 4 years ago right after our 21st birthdays, which is symbolic as we both will turn 25 in two weeks , which also marks 4 years in this perfect little house.

It's the weekend so I'm still in my room in my pajamas while Amanda is making us both breakfast. We try to alternate cooking so that we each get to do things without making each other feel burdened. It's almost 10 now i better go see what we will eat today. As i walk out the door i can smell the sweet aroma of vanilla pancakes and freshly pressed waffles. I quickly walk over to our tiny kitchen, which can comfortably fit two people in without us bumping into each other.

I go over to Amanda and say "i couldn't wait any longer. I'll go set the table, so just get them over when you are done". I slowly walk over to the table , a four chair medium sized table which was a gift from our parents when we moved in. We absolutely adore this table as this was the first ever furniture in our home. I then set the table while Amanda brings our freshly made breakfast and we dig in.

We are done eating 20 mins later, wash the dishes together before we go back to our own rooms to get ready.  Our rooms are across from each other and are decorared very differently. Mine is mostly pink and purple shades with lot of posters of books and movies and a couple of articles from the newspaper i work at called Middletown daily. I also have pictures of Amanda and i, our families and collegues. While Amanda's room has pictures of musicians and artists and lots of art. She loves to paint in her free time. Another reason why i am in awe of her.

We get ready in an hour and go out to the mini mall near our house to get some necessities for the week ahead. We pass by the restaurant Amanda works at to get lunch. The owners  Meg and Olivia, the married couple in their early forties, greet us warmly as we take our usual seats. Once we are done eating they tell us about the new bookstore that is opening down the street and the owner is someone who moved in from the city. We tell them that we will go take a look before heading home and bid our goodbyes.

As we head home, we decide to go check out the bookstore and the new resident in our town. When we approach the store we are both in awe and in shock of the person in front of us arranging the shelves. He is  a young, very ruggedly handsome guy, in his twenties, dressed casually and completely immersed in his work. We are almost caught staring when he turns around abruptly but we're saved by the sound of a phone ringing.

While he goes on to answer his phone we decide to head out but not before I get a quick look at his name tag which read 'Toby Cummins'. We leave right after and head home.

We reach home completely tired and intrigued by the newcomer. Soon forgetting about the newcomer go on with our day and get ready for the week to come.
