One Chance

Chapter 15

Amanda and I are just sitting in her room in silence, she hasn't said a word since we came home. I just held her for a while and got her some water. After half an hour she gives me a small smile and tells me she's okay. Amanda has always been a person who takes her time to open up. She'll tell you when she's ready and no one can make her say anything unless she wants to. 

I've known her my whole life and I know when she's like this she just prefers someone to be there even if it is just us sitting quietly. I give her space and am just about to get up to go make dinner when I hear the bell ring. 

I open the door to see Toby with a basket and ice cream. " I prepared this dinner for us and it was supposed to be a surprise. I came to the restaurant to take you to dinner, but I do know the only place you need/want to be right now is with your best friend. So, I went home and packed all this and bought you ice cream." 

" I was just about to make dinner. This is so sweet of you Toby and I'm sorry your plan is ruined. But I want to be here for Amanda. Thank you for being there for us today and for all of this. You really didn't have to do it but I appreciate it. " I say while taking the basket and the ice cream from him. 

"Why don’t you come in for a few minutes and drink some water? " I add. He nods and comes in. 

" So how is Amanda. She looked really shaken up. I hope she feels better soon. " He says while he takes the water from me and downs it in one go. 

" Yeah, she'll be fine. I'm here for her, no matter what happens. Thank you for the food and for checking up on us. " I say really meaning it while I give him a hug. 

We let go after a few minutes. I really needed that. The warmth of his body is really soothing. He hold my hand and says," I'm here for you Lucy. I'm just a call or text away. Please take care of yourself. I'll leave you two alone now. Don't forget to eat okay? ". 

He finally lets go of my hand and leaves. I see him off and return to the table to open the food. 

To my utmost delight, there was Creamy Thyme chicken, shrimp pasta and seared salmon with lentil salad with two slices of chocolate cake. It’s enough to make me smile. I serve them in two plates and take them to Amanda. 

Amanda immediately lifts her head up when she sees the food. “This smells so delicious. I heard voices, did someone come in?”, she asks. 

" Uh yeah. Toby was here. He brought us this food. There's ice cream too if you want. I've put it in the fridge so if you feel like eating it, just know that it's there. " I say handing her a plate. 

"I am so hungry. I haven't eaten a thing since lunch." She then hurriedly eats the food like it'll disappear or something. 

" Slow down. There's more if you want. " I say struggling to hold my laughter. 

" This is so delicious. Toby is an amazing cook. You are so lucky. If you didn't have eyes for him, I definitely would have made a move. " She says still stuffing herself with the food. 

I roll my eyes and begin eating. " He's all mine, just saying. I don't plan to let him go. " I add before I am lost in the food. 

We are done eating and finally make it out of Amanda's room and settle on the couch. 

" Can I have ice cream, pleaassee”, she says. 

"Sureee... but there’s also chocolate cake. " I say with a grin knowing too she'll have a hard time choosing between the two. 

" Wait... This seems more like food he made for a date. Did I just interrupt your plans for tonight", she says with a look of worry.

" No, not at all. He was going to surprise me. But it's okay, he understands, and I wouldn't be anywhere else right now. So, don't think of it much. " I assure her and get both the cake and ice cream from the kitchen.
