Toby and I ended up meeting at a ramen shop for lunch as my interview was much shorter than expected. "So you got the job?" said Toby.
"Crushed that shit."
"That's how I roll. Me and the uptight looking Japanese lady."
"This place is such a mind fuck."
"You don't know the half of it. Now stop all the swearing. It's making me homesick."
Toby laughs. "We do curse a hell of a lot in the US."
"Fuck right we do," I say laughing. "Still there are some things I like about Japan. The people are much more clean and friendly here."
"That's true. I think I just like traveling and taking in new things. It clears my head."
"Where do you think you'll go next?"
Toby shrugs, "Maybe Singapore? I'm not a big gum chewer."
"Ha! I don't know if I'll ever leave. What reason would I have?"
"You could always come traveling with me, and live the hobo insta ready lifestyle."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah maybe. We do get along."
"That's true. Right now I'm figuring stuff out. So I couldn't decide something like that." I'm definitely not ready to leave Sakei, not that I would say that out loud.
"I'll be here at least few more months anyway. Unless life throws me somewhere else early."
"Good. If nothing else I have someone to speak English with.
"I'll drink to that. Cheers." We clink our glasses and cut up the rest of the meal.
After the meal I stop by the store and buy ingredients on the way home. I'm thinking about making homemade pizza for dinner. I'm not feeling super Japanese at the moment.
The pizza ended up turning out really good. I've also got ice cold beer and a pot of coffee on for when Sakei writes later. It's getting dark. I hope he comes home soon.
Sakei POV
I'm having wine at Long Island when I should go straight home. Why am I so nervous? She's the same person I've been living with for a minute now.
"Is everything alright?" says Kuni bringing me out of my daze.
"Oh yeah. I guess so."
"Nope," says Yamato. "I've been sitting here talking about my sexy date last night, and you haven't even made comments."
"I'm deeper than just being a regular perv."
"But you don't like to show it," says Yamato. "This Sadie girl must really be doing a number on you."
"You haven't even brought her by," says Kuni. "Normally you show your ladies off."
"This is different. Our situation is... complicated..."
"Would you like your fortune?" says Kuni.
"No. I don't believe in that stuff. Plus I make my own destiny."
"Then you should talk to her," says Yamato.
"You're right." I drink down my wine and head out the door. "Bye guys. Wish me luck."
"Go her the girl!" both say in unison. God these guys are cheesy. As I'm walking out the door a woman runs up to me.
"Excuse me! Are you Takamasa Sakei?" she says.
"Yes," I say. "Are you wanting an autograph or something?"
"No I just want to hug you. You're writing changed my life!"
"Well I'm not sure that's entirely app-" Oof! She hugged me tight as she could before I could say no. I thought I heard a camera click. Maybe it was my imagination. I keep walking. Sadie, I'll see you soon.
