"So where to?" I say.
Sakei eyes me up and down. "A woman's outfit tells her mood." I'm wearing a cute pink dress, and my old converses. "You're dressed cute for your man, yet you're prepared to walk. I've got this." Sakei reaches out and takes my hand. Shocked I grab it back. "What no love from my honey?"
"This is Japan. Is handholding in public even allowed?"
"Lighten up, we're newlyweds," he says taking my hand again. "So tell me about yourself? It only seems right to know about the woman sleeping in my bed."
"Hmm, let's see. I'm from California. My favorite color is yellow, but I wear a lot of pink. I worked as an editor before my company closed. I loved it, but I'm not even sure where to find anymore jobs like that. I'd just wait tables if I wasn't so clumsy."
"I can help you with that. I'm a writer. I can get you tons of work that you can even do at home."
"I never thought of freelance. That's a good idea."
"I'm full of good ideas," says Sakei smiling. "Also give yourself some credit. I'm sure you can bring food out to a table."
I give him a playful push. "Give waitresses some credit. It's harder than it looks."
"Speaking of waiting tables, let's stop for breakfast in this cafe."
"Oh it's so cute."
"Isn't it though? I picked it." I see he has no problem in the ego department.
After breakfast we spend the day just walking around town and the park learning things about each other. I learn his father is also a writer. He's actually writing the movie version of the book his father wrote. This puts a lot of pressure on him, and he wanted a fake wife to research the role. I love this side of him. I knew I felt more than some random playboy.
"There's something I've been wanting to ask you? Why didn't you go back to America when you lost your job? The real story, not the stock, 'I just love Japan' answer. Something must be keeping you away to chose the streets instead of your your hometown."
I start to answer, and I really intend to tell him the full ugly truth. However, we run into his horrible lady friend. "Oh hello Sakei. It's so good to run into you," she says looping her arm through his. "Hello Sadie." This woman is so stiff I think if she had a stick in her butt it would break.
"Hello," I say trying my best to keep my fake smile.
"Sakei I'm on my way to lunch on a yacht. You simply must come. I won't take no for an answer. Sadie, do you mind if I steal your husband for a while?"
"Sure," I say forcing the smile much harder. "Sakei, I'll just see you at home." I turn and practically run away. I'm just some girl he dug out of the gutter. How could I compare to her glamorous lifestyle? My eyes are so full of tears I can't even see where I'm going.
