The sun was setting over the water to the left of us. It was beautiful, and I knew that it was probably going to be the last sunset I see. My stomach growled cause both me and my older brother were thinking about the tea on rice that we used to make at the orphanage. I watched as Atsushi face-planted on the ground.
"Ow," he said. "Damn it..." he swore. I didn't say anything cause I've been exposed to a lot of swears over the years. "We're going to die of hunger, aren't we?" Atsushi asked no one. After we were kicked out of the orphanage, we've had nowhere to sleep, no roof over our heads, no pillows for our heads, and as one might expect, not a cent to our names. Yet, we both lack the courage to steal. Which is how we've landed in our current predicament. However... if we wish to live, we have no choice but to steal and take from others. Atsushi slammed his fist into the ground and pushed himself off the ground. We then both thought back to the orphanage.
"Get out you good for nothings!" One adult said.
"No orphanage would welcome the likes of you two!" another adult said.
"The world would be a better place if you two would just die in a ditch somewhere!" the first adult said again.
"Shut up..." Atsushi thought/said out loud. "Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!" he yelled while standing up again. "Die in a ditch? We're not gonna die! We're gonna live, no matter what it takes!" Atsushi said while clenching his fists. "Okay... We'll... no I'M going to rush the first person who comes along and rob them of everything they've got!"
"Why just you?" I asked him.
"Because you're younger and weaker than me, Narumi, plus you're hurt and I don't want you to get hurt even more," He told me. Atsushi then gasped and turned around, only to see someone on a scooter zoom by. "Well, that was mission impossible. I can't catch him on an empty stomach... Next!" he closed and opened his eyes only to see a huge group of military police marching. "I... I doubt military police would be toting their wallets during training. But the next person that comes along... for sure!" he then closed his eyes and opened them again and turned around. "I got this!" We then both looked into the river and saw someone floating down the river.
"Huh," I said.
"Well..." Atsushi hesitated. I looked at him from the ground. "I can't possibly count him," He said while sweating and his left eyebrow twitched. "Y-Yeah, I'll pass, please," We watched as crow randomly came and started poking the person's legs. "I...I'll pass..." He said.
"Atsushi, come on," I said while standing up and getting into a diving position.
"Fine!" he said while shaking his head. We then both jumped into the water. The second I hit the water, I turned into a dolphin quickly so I could swim to the person as fast as I could. I felt the cuts on my right eye reopen again because I transformed, but I didn't care. Atsushi grabbed onto my fin and I quickly swam over to the person. Atsushi grabbed the man and I quickly swam back to shore. Once we got on land, I jumped into the air, transformed back, and landed on the bank with the man and Atsushi. We were both panting because we both had to hold our breaths for a little while. The man then suddenly opened his eyes and sat up startling both me and Atsushi. "You were floating down the river. Are you okay?" Atsushi asked the man.
"I made it," the man said. "Damn." The man said angrily.
" 'Damn'?" Atsushi asked ticked off. *Did he just say "Damn"?* Atsushi asked me.
