A LITTLE CRUSH
ITS BEEN a week since I've transferred to Midtown High. Everything is going good so far. I mean my grades are steady, since I wasn't as far behind everyone else as I thought I'd be and Claire has introduced me to all of her friends. It's different this time, usually being the new kid at a new school sucks but this time I'm actually glad I switched.I rip the academic decathlon poster sheet off the bulletin board. Mirkwood tried to get me on their team multiple times before but I kept declining it because I thought it would be boring but maybe I'll check it out this time. The competition is in October so I can still sign up. I talked about it with Liz and Flash since they're both in it and they said it was "pretty cool" and that I should join. And maybe there's another person that's encouraging me too.
Peter Parker.
We've talked a few times the past week. And when I mean talk, I mean the occasional "Do you have a pen/pencil I can borrow?" or the "I'm sorry" when we bump into each other in the halls.
And maybe I've developed a little crush on him. It's nothing too big. I barely know the guy. He just gets my attention.
"Hey Nicholas" I look up from the paper in my hands to see a brown-haired girl standing in front of me. It's Maia, she sits in front of me in French.
"Hey Maia" I greet her.
"Can we talk for a sec?" She asks me. Why would she want to talk to me? I mean we've talked in class but that was only because the teacher instructed us to. I nod my head, shoving the academic decathlon poster in my jacket pocket as we start walking in the direction to my locker.
"I was just wondering if you and uhm...are you and Claire dating?" She asks abruptly.
I laugh, I guess it would make sense for people to think that as we're together all the time but I don't see her like that. Or any girl to be exact.
"No, no we're just friends" I tell her.
We turn to face each other when we stop at my locker. "Oh well since you guys aren't dating..." her words drifting off as she adjusts her bag strap. "Maybe we can go on a date?" She asks me briefly.
"Oh" I realize now why she wanted to talk to me. She starts wringing her fingers nervously as she waits for my answer. I sigh, giving her a small smile trying to ease her nerves "Maia you're nice and all but I don't really like you like that. I'm sorry" I say, trying to let her down easy. I really don't want to hurt her.
The bell rings and people start moving into classes and clearing out of the halls. She looks up at me, not meeting my eyes. "Oh okay... I understand" she smiles briefly, trying to seem like she's not hurt. "I'm sorry really, we can still hang out if you want but not as a date" I tell her.
"No I'm- it's okay, really. I should get to class now. See you later Nicholas" she assures me. I simply nod at her as she walks away from me, blending in with the other students. Wow. I was not expecting that. I hope I didn't hurt her feelings. I sigh, turning to my locker, I open and get my math textbook for next period.
