Edward was glad to see Harry's relieved look when they returned to classes on Monday; Madam Pomfrey had insisted he stay in the hospital wing for the rest of the weekend. Zabini didn't really help his brother's good mood though; he had finally taken off his bandages, and was now doing dramatic imitations of Harry falling off his broom. He spent much of Potions pretending to be a dementor; Ruby cracked near the end of it and hit him in the face with a crocodile heart, causing Snape to break his tradition of not punishing her and giving her detention.
As Edward, Draco, Onyx, and Topaz headed to Remus' class on Tuesday morning, Onyx said irritably, "If Professor Snape is teaching Defense again, I'm skiving off. Check who's in there, Topaz."
Topaz gave him an exasperated look but peeked inside. He smiled. "It's okay."
Remus looked skinnier and paler, and there were dark shadows under his eyes, but he smiled at Edward and his friends nonetheless as they entered. The Ravenclaws and Slytherins were complaining about the homework as they sat down. Onyx joined in heatedly.
"He set two freaking roles of parchment!" he said indignantly. "On werewolves! We don't know anything about werewolves except that Edward defends them-"
Edward turned red.
"Did you tell Professor Snape that you haven't covered them yet?" Remus asked.
"Yes," Edward answered, "but he said that he was teaching the class and he should decide what we would learn that day. He wouldn't listen."
"Two roles of freaking parchment!" Onyx said furiously.
Remus chuckled. "Don't worry. I'll speak to Professor Snape. You don't have to do the essay."
"I've already finished it, and Ed finished it in two minutes," Topaz sighed.
"How do you know so much about werewolves?" Onyx asked Edward.
"The same reason he knows about everything else," Draco laughed. "He was raised by Professor Lupin."
Edward and Remus exchanged glances before his foster father thanked Draco and started the lesson.
After the bell rang, Remus said, "Edward, I'd like a word."
"Tell Flitwick I'll be there in a moment," Edward told Draco and Onyx. "See you at lunch," he said to Topaz.
When everyone had gone, Edward walked up to Remus' desk and sat on the edge, careful not to knock the hinkypunk cage off of the edge.
"Is it about the essay?" Edward asked.
"Partially." Remus closed his briefcase with a snap.
"Professor Snape told me I didn't have to write the ways on how to -- how to kill a werewolf," said Edward, feeling both angry and scared. Remus gave him a worried look.
"Why is Severus so... warmed to you?" he asked after a pause.
"I think it's because I look like my mother," said Edward, glad at the change of subject. "He hates Harry because he looks a lot like James. But I don't share the same father. It probably helps that I'm in his House."
"Hmm," said Remus. "I thought he stopped liking Lily after we finished school."
Edward stared at him. "Liking? I just assumed they were friends."
Remus gave him an amused look, then changed the subject again. "Harry's asked me to teach him the Patronus Charm."
"He wants to fight dementors so that he doesn't lose another Quidditch match," Edward guessed with a sigh of exasperation. "Honestly. I don't understand why people are so obsesed with Quidditch. It's more dangerous than that Muggle sport Onyx was telling me about, Rugby, and people have nearly died in that sport...."
