brother, let me be your fortress
when the night winds are driving on,
be the one to guide your way;
bring you home.
EMBER SUNK INTO the arm chair, staring into the fireplace. Here she'd spent so many hours, laughing with Susan and Hannah, talking to Cedric, doing homework, or just enjoying the calmness of a cackling fire that was now missing. Instead the room was cold and empty, just like her heart.This was it. The final fight. Just that for her it was over. Now the only thing left to her was the opportunity of giving into her fate.
Neither can live, while the other survives.
It wasn't about Harry or Voldemort. Though he was the one to defeat the Dark Lord, it didn't mean a thing, if both of them survived. No, it never had been about the Chosen One and the Dark Lord.
It was her. Ember and Harry. Darkness and Light. Neither can live, while the other survives. Harry had to defeat Voldemort. The light had to defeat the darkness. And darkness she was.
Her fingers dug into the yellow cussion, until her nails broke through the soft cloth.
She was going to die.

Back in the entrance hall, Ember stopped in front of the marble stairs. She watched Neville and Oliver Wood lift a small body from the floor. Colin Creevy. Eyes dead and empty, before Wood closed them for him.
Ember wondered, who would close her eyes.
"Emmie!", Neville shouted out, as his eyes landed on Ember. Wood took Colin's lifeless body and carried him into the Great Hall. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm fine", she replied in a husky voice that didn't sound like her own. "Neville, have you seen Harry?"
"Not in a while", he replied, looking around as if Harry would appear out of nothingness any given moment. "You don't think he —"
"No", Ember quickly cut him off, afraid to hear the words she feared the most. "No, he wouldn't. He surely is somewhere around." Looking for the snake, she added in her head. He for sure is looking for the snake. "If you see him, tell him I wait for him in the Great Hall, will you?"
"Of course", said Neville, and with a nod he walked away, looking for more fallen fighters.
Ember stepped into the Great Hall. Her eyes immediately fell on the family with flaming red hair in the midst of the crowd. She knew they were standing around Fred, though she couldn't see him. Two feet apart stood George, looking utterly lost, his face swollen, his eyes red.
