I used to pretend that I understood things well.
I had given in to the illusion that I was an amazing person, without ever having done anything myself to bring about that result.
But after meeting Viola, I learned to strive for greatness for my own sake.
I don't mean to brag or revert to my previous ways, but I understand a lot more about the world now.
And yet, I, Julia Burke, am at a complete loss.
Normally, I should be in a good mood right now.
That's because my baby brother was safely born!
He's really cute, you know?
I was worried that I might not like him since there's an eleven-year age gap between us. He's also two months premature and doesn't look healthy in the least, but when I held him and he grabbed my finger tightly while smiling, I really felt like I was holding the most adorable thing in the world!
One day, that cute, innocent little soul will take over the duchy. He's gonna be pressured from all angles. The Burke's are known for being exceedingly harsh with their heirs.
For that reason, as the big sister, I'm going to spend my time spoiling my baby brother on behalf of the rest of the family. Gosh, he's really too cute!
So for the twenty-four hours since Jaimee's birth, I've been planning on giving him lots of cute clothes and fun toys. I was going to go out today and buy them, but unfortunately, someone is standing in my way.
That would be the heir to the ducal family of Canmore.
Vincent.
Do I know what he wants?
No.
Do I want him to be here?
No.
I want him to leave as soon as possible so I can buy presents for Jaime!
Get out of here, Vincent! Nobody likes you!
Please!
And thank you!
The person in question either took no notice or was blatantly ignoring the fact that I didn't want him there. He sat in the chair diagonal to me, one leg crossed over his other knee, relaxed but still radiating poise and elegance.
Who said he's the son of a duke?
He could easily pass as a prince.
It annoys me, though, so I won't say that out loud.
Vincent lifted the china containing the freshly prepared black tea to his nose and admired the scent.
He took a small sip before setting the teacup down and opening his mouth to speak.
"Congratulations on the birth of the Burke family's heir."
He came here because of Jaimee?
Oh! I see! Vincent is also an older sibling! I'm sure he cares very deeply for Viola and wants to spoil her. He probably came here because he found someone to talk about it with. That makes sense!
It's a shame I can't go out today, but if Vincent wants to talk about Jaimee, then that's fine, too.
He's just too cute to not brag about!
"Thank you very much! Unfortunately, Jaimee is sleeping now, or I'd take you to meet him."
Vincent smiled softly, noticing the improvement in my mood.
