He's disappointing in the end.
She doesn't know why this surprises her.
"I don't know anything about being a lord, I don't even know how to even use a fork, but I know that I love you," He says, and it was beautiful, and for a second, she's so, so happy. Happy that he loves her. Happy that he is happy, because she had loved the Gendry she knew from their time on the run, too, but this was one smiled so much more. But then he keeps talking, and he's kneeling, and she wants to tell him no, stop, don't ruin this, but then it's too late. "Marry me. Be my lady. Come be the lady of Storms End."
I can be your family, she had said once, and she meant it, as much as she had meant anything when she was that young. She hadn't known what it meant, what she was promising, but she knew that it was true.
No, he had answered, and it hurt more than all the other good byes hurt, even with him standing in front of her. You'll be my lady.
It's what he had always wanted, apparently.
Which is awful, considering its the only thing she couldn't give him.
"Any woman would be lucky to be your lady," She says, and she means it, and hates that she means it. Hates that she is saying good bye. "Anyone. But I'm not a lady." She watches the realization set over him. That she's saying no. He had been so certain that she would say yes. She doesn't know how to explain to him where he went wrong. Doesn't know if she really wants to bother, if he still doesn't get it. "That's not me."
Ladies aren't fighters.
Ladies don't kill a room full of sons with their father's face. Ladies don't kill the knight king. Ladies don't get to go south and kill the queen.
He wants her, she knows.
But he deserves a lady.
