The winter chills crept in on us like a hawk stalking their prey. I saw the snowflakes just beginning to fall. I grabbed my backpack and began to walk through the park hopeful to find some old leftovers or something so we wouldn't go without food, like I had been for the past two days. It must have been 2 hours and nothing was found. I came up to a house and rang the doorbell. "Hi, umm... I'm Sadie and I have no food do you-" I started to fake cough in hopes of getting her sympathy "Sorry are there any leftovers or money that can be spared?" She looked down at me with cold grey eyes. "Those who can't fend for themselves do not deserve to be fed" She croaked and with surprising force slammed the door. I sighed and opened my pack and looked down at the bag that contained a thin blanket, some socks, a marker and an extra jacket.
With no other choice left, we trotted into town. Tess and I sat down and I grabbed a cardboard square from the trash. With a marker, I wrote in the best writing that I could:
No Food day 3
It was all I could do. A man and women walked out and she gave me two quarters and a dime. 60 cents. I was cold and I could hardly feel my toes. I looked up at the sky and wished for life to be different, I wished me and Tess could be in a better place where we wouldn't have to scavenge for food and warmth. I looked into the window and saw a very pissed off man talking on the telephone, glaring at me. I sighed. Oh great, he's calling the cops.
I looked around quickly for a place to hide. I ran towards a pitifully small group of houses near the edge of town. I sprinted under a hedge by one house. I ducked under and Tess curled up beside me. She was two now, I think. You lose track of time after while out here. She could hunt well, or as well as I could. She rested her head on my leg as we heard the police coming. They ran passed us not even stopping. Luckily, no dog was with them. I used to know a group of kids who would rob houses in this neighborhood. I don't think I'd do that, I am too much of a goody two shoes I guess. Tess looked to a dog door intensely. I lay down beside her and passed out.
Waking up, I saw a man walking past returning from something. He was an officer. Hand cuff keys dangled in my reach. I tried to snatch them but it was a clumsy, foolish plan,. He slapped his hands on where the keys where a fifth of a second ago. He quickly looked around and he bent down staring me straight in the eye. I stared at him not backing down. He reached for my arm. Ack!" He hissed at Tess as she nipped him on the nose. She growled at him, not biting-yet. I stared, never seeing her so vicious. For the second time today I suddenly felt fear. "Tess!" I crawled out, as a hand landed hard on my shoulder. I ran but he grabbed my leg, and I fell to the ground. Hiis hand quickly let go of me, as he yelped in surprise. Tess had bitten him!! He swore and I staggered to my feet. Tess ran, but then fell to the ground. He had pulled the taser on her! I screamed at him. and grabbed my dog, as she twitched on the ground. He fell to the ground his leg bleeding. I pulled her over my shoulder, and her eyes glazed in surprise. I staggered off, she was my friend and I couldn't leave her and let her get, killed. Something caught my eye, it was a black cat with a white tip on its tail. The stranger trotted up to me in the darkness of the night. There was a few white flecks on its mussel too. I staggered out with the dog on my back and the cat to my heel. I limped slowly to the forest park. I found some tall grass and dropped Tess countably on it. The cat lay on her. "I'll call you Night" I whispered to him, I guessed it was a he because he was too big boned to be a girl. I lay on the ground beside them, Tess started to stir as the taser was wearing off. I pulled the keys out of my pocket, were they really worth snatching almost costing our lives? I dropped them back in my pocket.
