Hours later, I sit in my cold apartment on the couch, trying to watch tv.
My phone is sitting right by me on the arm rest and I'm hyper aware of it.
Ring, damn it! I just need to hear his voice and I'll feel better. Maybe I should text him? He's probably busy. I hope his mum is alright. No news is good news, right? Or maybe that means things are so bad he can't use his phone.
Avi arrives home during the ad break and I ask him all about his day to distract myself. It seems to work because when Avi wanders off down the hall and I sit back down on the couch, and check my phone for the millionth time tonight... there's a text from Oliver.
Sorry I haven't called yet. Mum's stable now.
I immediately hit the dial button. My heart is in my throat as relief washes over me.
"Hi," he sighs down the phone.
"Hey you," I smile and hope he can here it in my voice.
"How's your mum? What happened?... if you don't mind me asking?" I don't want to be too pushy."Some idiot drove through a red light and smashed into the drivers side. It was a bit touch and go there when she first got to the hospital but they've managed to stabilise her now."
"Do they know what's wrong with her?" I feel a lump forming in my throat. I just wish I could do more than sit here worrying.
"Bleeding in the brain. A few broken bones... Billie, they-" He stammers a little and it shocks me. He's usually so in control. "They've had to put her in an induced coma." His voice sounds tight and forced.
"But that's good right? She can do more healing that way?"
No reply. I can hear the faint sounds of beeping machines in the background.
"Have you had some dinner? Just cause I know you didn't get to finish lunch so I thought you must be hungry and I, I worry about you too. As well as your mum."
"No I didn't have dinner." He says dejectedly.
"You should eat something." I say back.
"How can I when -" he stops himself from saying the words out loud.
"It's 9 o'clock... I can bring you something if you'd like?"
He hesitates before answering. "There's a food court here, Billie."
"I want to bring you something."
"You really don't have to,"
"Does that mean you don't want me to?"
He sighs long and loud down the receiver.
"I don't know,""I want to see you," I admit in a whisper.
"I want to see you too, it's just..." He sounds so tired.
"Then I'm coming." I stand up already getting my things together. "I'll bring you some food. And a book, to take your mind off things."
"Okay," He says finally.
"Okay, I'll text you when I get there."
I grab a container and put in a slice of the Shepard's pie I made for dinner. I grab a packet of biscuits too.
I head to my room next to put my shoes on and grab a book for him off my shelf. Before I know it I'm in a taxi paying the driver, a very high fee for a Thursday night, might I add.
I'm here
