A few brows raised when we walked into campus together. I heard a few;
"Thought he'd run a million miles once she graduated,"
"She must have already gotten Lissa," and,
"Did you see the way he was beaming yesterday?" comments.
"The gym comrade?"
"Dangerous suggestion Rose, but sure."
"Lock the door Dimitri," I reminded once we were in the gym.
"The supply room Roza?" His eyes twinkled.
"Memories comrade?"
"Yes Roza."
He pushed me against the wall as he had done so many times before. "Do you remember how many times I snapped at you when we were in this position?"
"Yes."
"Remember the 'don't call me that!' responses?"
"Yes." My heart was pounding. What was he getting at?
"The reason I kept snapping at your 'comrade'ing me was because of the way it pulled me to you. I didn't hate it. I resented my heart's reaction to it. I was supposed to be your teacher, but every time you said it it made me want to kiss you. It still does."
Just to prove his point, he trapped me in the exact same position and kissed me.
"Hot damn Dimitri!" I exclaimed once I'd gotten my breath back. "Anything else?"
"Yes. So much more."
He mirrored the day he told me about his dad, sitting us across from each other, his hands rubbing circles into mine. "Remember this?"
"Yes."
"This is when I almost completely lost control. You had me whipped and it scared the hell out of me. "It won't happen to you. You're too beautiful"."
I gasped. "Way back then? You really wanted to say it and it scared you, how vulnerable you were to me."
"Yes milaya. Way back then."
He led me to the place we were when he'd told me about Ivan. The first time I saw through the mask. "Even then. When you figured out Ivan. You saw straight through me. You started forcing me to be open right there and then."
Next stop was back on the floor, him laying on top of me, with my arms above my head- his hands on my wrists.
"This was the first time I almost gave into kissing you. I bloody wanted to and regret not doing it then."
We made a new memory in that exact same spot. It was the kiss that should have happened a long time ago.
"Better comrade?" I asked when he pulled us up.
"Much." He smiled one of his rare, full, breathtaking smiles.
"Anything else?"
"Not that we didn't fix after Spokane, and the cabin." The smile didn't leave his face.
"Aww. My turn."
I led him around the gym explaining, reliving, and fixing moments that had shaped the beginning of our relationship. It felt so good to go through this. It was refreshing and rejuvenating, and, most importantly, ours. It was so private, so special. We walked out feeling as if our relationship was stronger than ever and as if a weight had been lifted of our shoulders. To us, our student/teacher roles were well and truly shattered.
"Dimitri?"
"Yes Rose?"
"Thank you. For that. For everything."
"Even the times I pushed you away? Hurt you?"
"Yes. Even them. I couldn't have grown without them."
"Oh Rose. You don't realise how much you've taught me in return."
"Enlighten me later comrade." My voice turned soft, and just a tad suggestive.
"Rose!" He playfully reprimanded. "What have I told you about that!"
We laughed our heads off at that. It earned more raised brows and stares. And I, being Rose Hathaway, had to respond to the crowd with "take a picture! It'll last longer!"
Another "Rose!" from Dimitri had us laughing uncontrollably.
"Guardian Hathaway! Guardian Belikov! Where have you been all day? You missed an important meeting."
Alberta ran up to us. Her use of my title momentarily shocked me.
"Sorry Guardian Petrov. We were in the gym with our phones off." I politely explained.
"Guardian Belikov?" She queried Dimitri.
"Sorry Guardian Petrov. She's right."
"Fine. I'm guessing you were going down memory lane, not training." She announced as if it were a widely known fact. I resisted the temptation to cringe.
"Don't look like you don't know what I'm talking about."
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"Stolen moments." What?!
"With all due respect Guardian Petrov, we have a missed meeting to be caught up on." Not obvious subject change at all Dimitri!
"Ah. That." She opened her office door, letting us in then locking it. "It was about you two." She let that hang in the air. Continuing with "we were trying to figure out who won the pool about you two coming clean."
"What? You had a pool running about us?"
Un-believable! Knowing or guessing my love interest and boyfriend was one thing, running a pool about it- another thing entirely. And this is from the campus guardians! What was so funny about my relationship that they felt the need to bet on it?!
"Yes Rose." She turned to Dimitri, "Belikov. What happened last night?"
"Nothing." We both answered. It was true.
"Nothing? You two raised eyebrows this morning walking into campus together and you're saying nothing happened?!" She sounded scandalised by the lack of a scandal.
"Okay, a few light kisses. Nothing more. An innocent night together." I responded. She apparently wanted some dirt.
"Still don't believe it. Surely there's more."
"No. Rose is right." Thank you Dimitri!
"Why? First night of freedom and you don't use it? I don't get it."
"Umm..." We turned to face each other with a 'should we tell her?' look in our eyes.
"Spit it out you two."
"We, kinda, gave in a while ago." I let her process that.
"When?" She asked cautiously.
"Hours before the attack," Dimitri joined in.
