Chapter 6: Mission in the Land of Rice Fields - 2
*Kakashi's pov*
I open my eyes as sunlight hits my eyes. Last night's sleep was very refreshing. I did not see any nightmares of finding my father dead on the floor. I had forgotten how good it felt to sleep so peacefully.
That's when I remember that I wasn't supposed to be sleeping. I fell asleep leaning to the tree trunk where I was guarding with Moriko. That's when Minato-sensei comes to me and tells me that seeing how tired we were he let us sleep there. I apologized to him, promising this won't happen again, but he just smiles and goes on to wake the others. Sensei has always been lenient with us. Then I turn to wake Moriko. I then realised that we had huddled together in our sleep. I feel my face become hot, but avoid moving away looking at Moriko, who was still asleep. She looked so peaceful in her sleep. I remember our conversation from last night and frown. I can't help but wonder about how much I don't know about her...
That's when she opens her eyes, and I realise that I am leaning very close to her face. I move away from her, quick enough to not let her see my face that has turned red, and stand up. I soon notice that Moriko was looking away too. After breakfast, just when I was thinking for the umpteenth time if she remembered last night's conversation, Moriko pulled me away from the rest under the pretence of helping me pack my things. After making sure that we were out of earshot, she began 'About last night, keep it to yourself. Don't tell anyone - even Minato-sensei.' I nodded lightly. After a short pause, she said again 'I can't believe that I told all that to you! You are the first one I have ever told to...' she had a look of disbelief.
'Really?' I ask while trying to hide my excitement. She meets my eyes and nods slowly. I look in her eyes, which looked a little different from before. And then I realised - even though she looked annoyed as usual, there was this look of trust, which seemed to have deepened. I strangely felt happy at this. Before either of us could say anymore, we are called by Minato-sensei. Princess Kiyoko seems to have stopped keeping her distance from Moriko like last night, and was mingling with her like before.
*Moriko's pov*
No one talking about how I had done with those enemy-nin. Even the princess is behaving as though it never happened. Minato-sensei, however, asks if I was feeling well since using my kekkei genkai exhausts me a lot. I tell him that I am fine. Kakashi indirectly asked me about it, and I explained it. But it still amazes me that I told Kakashi about "those times" as well, when I could never tell Tokemi.
As the Sun reached higher up in the sky, we began passing by many paddy and rice fields, meaning that we were very close to our destination. Minato-sensei confirms this and suggests we stop for lunch.
It is a very good day today, and the birds are singing as well to celebrate this beautiful day. Rin, Obito and me sit and see down the valley, where the farmers are working on their crops. It feels very good, us four together. I pulled Kakashi along as well, since he insisted on guarding the princess, despite the princess telling him to take a break.
We all sit silently, until Rin speaks 'It must feel so good, living away from the town, and nearer to the forest and the farms. If I ever got the chance to live in such a place, I would definitely take it!' she says. She then closes her eyes and begins imagining such a future.
