When Lisa walks out in her traditional Thai dress, I have to do a double take. I've never seen her in this type of outfit before. The annoying girl I used to know isn't the same girl walking toward me.
This one is ... different.
But then I catch myself. She's still the same on the inside.
Bratty. Childish. Annoying little Lisa I would always know.
And today, I'm going to be engaged to her. What are the chances?
Every since I was two, my future has been decided. I was going to have to marry Lisa Manoban, the daughter of my father's belated best friend.
I hate being told what to do, but the only reason I agreed to marry her is because if I don't, my father was going to cut me out from his will.
When the engagement ceremony is over and the rings on our fingers, I can breath a little since that means we will be leaving to Thailand tomorrow morning.
I'm laying on the guest bed when I realize something. I was looking forward to going back to that States, I had forgotten there is a catch—Lisa will be coming back with us.
She will be staying with me before our big day later in the year, another thing I have to endure.
But I'm just glad this week long trip is almost finally over.
.....
I wait as Lisa and her mom exchange words before our flight. My parents had already taken the earlier flight home because my dad had an urgent meeting.
Mrs. Manoban says something in Thai to Lisa who nod back with tears in her eyes and they hug.
I look away, hoping this moment will be over soon. These kinds of situations make it awkward for me.
Mrs. Manoban comes up to me. "Please take care of my Lalisa, please," she asks me in broken English.
"Yes, I will," I say back with a smile. Then she hugs me. "Ready?" I say to Lisa.
Her eyes are red but she still nods. She hugs her mom one more time, and then her older brother Mark.
I walk to customs as Lisa follow behind me. She looks back a few times and continue to wave to her family until they disappear from sight.
"Will you be alright?" I ask her.
"I'll be fine. Don't worry about me," she says.
This is the first time I've seen Lisa cry, not like her usual self who was always strong and stubborn.
After we board the plane in first class, we don't talk much for the long flight back to New York City. In fact, we don't talk at all, and I don't mind.
