My life was like any life of any thirteen year old kid. I was thriving in our pack school and loved my family more than anything. I had just begun my training to be a pack warrior the year before. I had done more than a year of training now, but that didn't really mean anything. Our training so far had mostly consisted of sitting in a classroom learning the history and what it meant to be a pack warrior. They talked it up like we had no idea what the honor of being a pack warrior was. Obviously I knew the responsibility of being a pack warrior. It had been drilled into my head as soon as I could comprehend what the words meant.
My name is Athena. I am the oldest child in my family. My physical appearance is nothing spectacular. I don't have great looks or a great body. I am a tall lanky pubescent teen with brown hair and green eyes. Nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to looks. Not like I have a long line of guys waiting for my attention.
As you can probably already tell my future career will be as a pack warrior. Most packs are different than ours and do not allow the women to fight. However, Alpha Blake has started a new era in our pack. He had decided to fade in a generation of female wolves to start training with our pack warriors. I was one of the girls that was chosen to be a part of the program. We had been preselected at the age of six. Being a pack warrior had always been a part of my fate.
Some girls dropped out of the training once it started. They decided that they did not want to be a pack warrior. They wanted to be a typical female and be a homemaker for her mate. Nothing against those who want that, but that is certainly not me. While other girls grew up playing with barbies I learned some basic fighting skills. My dad said that it would be important to protect myself even if I decided that I didn't want to be a warrior.
Wolves didn't shift until the night of our seventeenth birthday. That was the night that most girls, and some boys, talked of ever since we learned of the day. Not only would that be the day that we are able to shift for the first time, it is also the day that we start to have a scent. In our society anyone under the age of seventeen does not have a scent. It protects us from enemies and keeps us safe from predators. That all changes when we reach age. We form a scent that other wolves can sense and track, but also a scent that our mate can use to identify us their soulmate.
Most people get pretty excited about finding their mate, but I am more excited to take my oath as a pack warrior. No one knows exactly what the trial is because it is forbidden to talk about to outsiders. Only those who have taken the oath and completed some sort of task know what happens, as well as our alpha and luna of course.
We had just started phase one of our training to be a pack warrior, bookwork. At this point we did not have anything supernaturally amazing about us. From all that could be seen we were ordinary humans, so now we just learned all of the book stuff needed to be a pack warrior. Once we reached seventeen then we would already have the book smarts to thrive. When we reach age we get supernatural strength, speed, and abilities. That is when we would learn hand to hand combat. I am excited to be a pack warrior and fight any enemy that tries to hurt my pack. I want to be that badass who can fight anyone who stands in her way. Seems like a long way away from now though.
I lived in the pack house with my two siblings, Harlow and Faye, and my dad. Harlow was ten and a mischievous little boy. He had brown hair and the characteristic family trait of the bright green eyes. The green eyes matched us all together as if to say that we are related with only a single glance. Harlow frequently tried to build booby traps around the pack house, and if it weren't for the fact that he was cute and the future Beta of the pack - well let's just say I don't know if he would have made it this far.
